Well, the wife has her flowers (thankfully she isn’t working right now so I don’t have to overpay to have them delivered to her work) and my parents have volunteered to let us get away for dinner. So that’s nice. We’re trying out the place nearest our house. Like I could probably hit it with a golf ball if I got it over the neighbor’s house and got a decent bounce down the hill. It’s either under new ownership or been renamed and rebranded since we moved here. We’ll see. If not, there’s an Irish pub next door that serves food.
Here’s a link to warm your hearts. The libertarian in a district in FL split off just enough of the Republican vote to elect a Democrat to the House in a special election. Unless you read the polling and then you see that a lot of Republicans probably just stayed home.
Wow, the NYT failed its own due diligence, but was able to use the wisdom of crowds to withdraw its job offer to someone who once admitted to knowing neo-nazis and not shunning them. Two things. One: if you have children who are approaching college age, please remind them that everything the put on the Internet is what police like to refer to as “evidence” (However, the internet can be changed!), Two: Don’t fucking use Twitter.
There is no problem the government cannot make worse. Scumbag ICE lawyer ran identity theft scam using immigrant IDs.

1, 2, 3, 11, 14, 15, 20, 22, 28, 32, 37, 38 and 40 though kinda creepy.
Is #32 Mrs. JB?
If so he’s one lucky guy.
…and he should share pics.
based on the decor of the room, she’s underage.
3, 8, 11, 22, 27, 33, 36
I mean, who can choose? But if I’ve got to: 1, 9, 24, 28, and 40 because she has eyes like a husky and that’d make a great story. And of that crew, 28 is the first pick.
22, 33, 38
Orgy
This was a tough one. Many strong candidates, all the girls giving it their all.
But there has to be a winner, and today it’s 24. Excellent work.
Good Lord, best one yet.
Mrs Gordilocks will appreciate the pre-game warmup.
Bert Mizusawa, retired major general and former Trump adviser, to run for US senate in VA. Claims can unseat incumbent Tim Kaine (D) if wins nomination.
Corey Stewart and EW Jackson again? Go away already.
Stewart wouldn’t be a horrible candidate if hadn’t actively decided to pander to the most insane segment of the GOP. Some of his lesser known positions are actually good.
Aspirin’s looking better and better.

Tylenol is just liver poison. If it were a new drug I doubt it could pass a RCT.
IT IS ALL I CAN HAVE, DAMMIT!
You can’t take opioids? I hope you never need surgery.
Opioids, sure. But no NSAIDs.
There is a strong correlation between the rise of Tylenol being prescribed for children and autism incidence. And as we all know, correlation equals causation.
Just sayin’.
Aspirin. Pshaw. If you don’t use laudanum, you should turn in your monocle.
About a 20 minute drive from me.
They’re currently clearing the school, still being treated as a mass casualty incident but no numbers yet.
Something something guns.
Apparently the shooter was a student and JROTC member. I don’t think he’s getting an invite from West Point.
was going to make a snarky comment, decided to pass.
Shooting own side? More like AF material.

Only the AF could have a midair collision and the only fatalities (and almost all of the injuries) were airborne troopers on the ground who weren’t involved in the initial collision.
Shooting own side? More like AF material.
HEY!
Meh. Fuggit.
You live near my in laws then. They’re in parkland.
I got caught up in the hullabaloo. I was volunteering at my son’s school and they put the entire county system on lockdown.
How did the Glibertarians make out? I’m still hearing from neighbors and friends about various connections to the shooting – on kid’s girlfriend, a couple of kids at church had cousins that haven’t checked in, a neighbor’s sister is a teacher out there…
The whole thing is kinda surreal.
I also volunteer with kids at church, so I spent my evening with my 5th grade group helping them sort out their reactions. Most didn’t really care – it isn’t real to them – but a couple were genuinely worried. Kids are awfully resilient though, so it was pretty easy to talk them through just how rare this sort of thing is and reassure them that they are safe and well protected. It doesn’t hurt that our church is Southern Baptist, and at any given time there are probably a dozen people in the building who are carrying. If you are a nutjob, you really, really don’t want to try to shoot up a Southern Baptist church. We probably have more women in the senior citizen’s category who carry every day than you’d need to repel a small jihadi cell.
#GunControlNow is trending (#3 trending topic in the US) on Twitter, because of course it is.
Because everything is politics.
Disgusting.
Jeebus, I made the mistake of checking the Twittersphere’s reaction to this. Wish I hadn’t.
Just like the time that psycho shot up the Repub softball game, right?
You know, I don’t think that happened that time.
*shocked face*
Man, I just realized this shooting is going to mess up Valentine’s Day for a lot of people for life. What a scumbag.
+1 “My Bloody Valentine”
Unless that’s the reason.
The date has me fearing this is a Elliott Rodger/Marc Lépine, thing.

Slow day so I was trolling Youtube.
Two black dudes listen to Metallica “One” for the first time ever and have the perfect reactions.
They do a bunch of metal songs. I like their reactions to “Holy Wars….the Punishment Due” because it’s a damned amazing song. Not quite my favorite Megadeth song, “Tornado of Souls” is, but close.
I like that black guy who does stuff with his white friends and then list things he learned.
Amazing how many views some videos get.

Child porn?
Yeah, I think Brett left something off of the end of that third paragraph.
Thanks guys, not sure what happened there.
And fixed, with added bonus snark. Thanks, Brett.
That school shooting is the HS my wife went to. She was just texting me about it.
What’s the ethnic breakdown?
Of the school or the victims? I know there are a fair amount of Jews, Hispanics mixed in with whites.

I’m wondering if this is going to get blamed on Trump and Nazis.

Being unattractive. If only 1 out 100 women would find out who you are and report you to your company for an “unwanted advance” in the long run, rolling the dice at a bar like that over a couple of years doesn’t sound like a smart bet.
I’m currently reading 12 Rules for Life, and today came across this passage:
Jordan Peterson, brutal enforcer?
Humans just won the brutal arms race, nothing unnatural about that.
J Pete mush lurk here… or he’s one of us…
…on his Canadian dogsled. Obviously.
Does Jordan Peterson wear a red speedo and carry a Webley?
ZARDOZ SPEAKS TO YOU, HIS CHOSEN UNIFORM OBSERVING ONE. THERE IS SOME VARIANCE IN UNIFORMS…BUT NOT MUCH. MOSTLY IN BOOT AND MASK CHOICES.
ZARDOZ HAS SPOKEN.
An owl killed 26 of my chickens in two nights. Just killed for fun and left the uneaten bodies all over my pasture. The innocence of animal brutality is an illusion.
Meerkats are cute…
https://www.google.com/amp/www.independent.co.uk/news/science/meerkats-revealed-as-the-most-murderous-mammal-known-to-science-a7335741.html%3famp
I like how the article uses the term “mobs of meerkats”. That’s almost as good as a murder of crows.
Also, the California ground squirrel is apparently more murderous* than cougars and jaguars. I suspect this is the species of squirrel that likes to tamper with internet comment boards.
*”Murderous” in this study means more likely to kill animals of the same species. Predators such as cougars and jaguars of course kill more of other species.
They sure murder the hell out of the macadamia nuts on my tree. I might get 5% of them after the squirrels are done.
I had an opossum kill a bunch of my chickens last year. It just ate the heads off and left the rest. Animals are not innocent.
Damn. My woods are filled with opossums and foxes but the donkeys keep them away. My neighbors get hit bad by the opossums though.
the…donkeys?
nm, found the post where you go into more detail. crazy.
I know a horse that likes to kill chickens. No clue why, but he does.
Know an old guy who buys a couple chickens every year because his dachshund likes to chase them to death. Not sure she ever catches one, but she’ll run them until they drop dead if she gets in the pen, which she manages to every year.
That makes some sense, dachshunds should have some hunting instinct in them. No idea why that horse likes killing chickens. He also managed to kill a Fucking Hate Bird, the Bird that Hates once as well. Maybe poultry killed his mother, I dunno.
They do indeed. She’s too old and fat to do it anymore, but my doxie was a hunting machine in her younger years. Killed many a chipmuck, squirrel, and bird. I don’t know how the hell she caught some of those birds, but she’d bring them to the back door all proud of herself.
Our Dashshund used to bring in rats. Big ones. She’d eat the head herself and allow us to have the rest of the carcass.
Our Scottie likes eating the secondhand scraps from the cats. It’s a vole heavy diet.
trsh, you need to turn that into a book and Hollywood diet fad…”The Vole Heavy Diet”.
Dachshund means badger dog. They were bred for hunting badgers, and the body is good for penetrating burrows.
Who needs arms when you got torso.
Our mini dachshund was 8 pounds of terror. She killed mice, rabbits, squirrels and possum and attacked a 140 pound Akita that ran the hell away when she let go (after swinging from it’s neck). If they were over 100 pounds no other critter would exist….except the humans who would serve them, of course.
Shit, that’s awful. I knew hawks and eagles would go after chickens, but didn’t know ow that owls would.
I’ve seen hawks kill my chickens too. Just swoop down and nail them 15 feet from me outside without any fear. The red-tails have trouble with full grown chickens. Not so much the owls though.
Before I had guardian donkeys in the outer pasture (they keep ground predators away), something kept killing my chickens at night. I thought it was a fox or opossum coming in from the woods. I tied a chicken to a cinder block, set it out in the open, and waited in the bushes with a shotgun. After five hours I felt something was about to happened when suddenly a huge owl swooped down and tried to take off with the chicken. I was too surprised to hit it, not that I would since it’s highly illegal, and it took off.
This second incident of the 26 deaths occurred more recently. I know this one was an owl because it also dive bombed through the bird netting in my turkey pen and killed 10 quarter-grown turkeys. That one hurt. I drove 3 hours to pick up these special heritage breeds. The owl had one foot stuck in the bird netting. We have a fake plastic owl next to the pen and my wife thought it was that at first. She didn’t understand how it got in the pen. Then it blinked at her and she screamed.
My plan this year is to go with Jersey Giant chickens, more turkeys, and potentially emus in the next few years. All grown under metal (not nylon that the owl crashed through) until big enough to be predator-bird proof.
If you want to see pure cruelty, watch the joy a housecat gets from torturing its prey.
The only reason house cats don’t kill and eat people is because they aren’t big enough. That’s it.
Same for chickens. Look in their eyes – you can tell they’d do it. I think if I passed out in the chix pen, all you’d find is a skeleton.
I had a girlfriend who used to say that about her cat – that she imagined, when it would stare at her, that it was thinking “Man, if I was bigger than you, I’d totally rip you apart and eat you” That cat killed things constantly. There were dead critters all around her yard and home. The cat would stash them in places like under the bed or behind the door.
One of my cats likes to stick rodents behind the tires of the car. I have to scrape up mouse jerky every few days all through the summer.
Thorough.
That’s why I kill every cat I see not wearing a bell. Sorry, I know it sounds cruel, but they destroy millions of songbirds every year. And then go home to ignore their cat food.
They are innocent in the sense that they lack agency. They are just following their instincts.
But, yeah, “nature red in tooth and claw.”
I agree it’s instinct or at least some sort of driven behavior.
I just find it strange that some people find hunting evil and unnatural when done by humans but perfectly fine by animals. A .308 is much more humane than the slow death that wolves and bobcats.
I’m still unable to convince my mother that the instant death we give our meat animals is more humane than the misery they endure in feedlots and slaughterhouses. I think it’s the personal “me” vs. the abstract “they”.
Mine stay in roll-around pens for just that reason. Picture arched greenhouses made of bent PVC and covered with chickenwire. Possums still try to dig under the edges, but it keeps the hawks and owls out.
I use the same thing now. Bent PVC, open floor, and wheels to move the chicken-tractors around. In this case, I started letting the chickens out during the day once they got too big for hawks and then closing them in at night. This worked for about a month and then they started refusing to go back inside at night. They didn’t last long.
I hate keeping them cooped up (pun intended) all the time. Besides, we never have ticks and rarely have house spiders when there’s chickens free-ranging in the yard. We get both, especially tons of giant wolf spiders and centipedes, whenever the chickens are forced to stay locked up. The plan this year is for the biggest chickens available.
ZARDOZ SPEAKS TO YOU, HIS NOTICING CHOSEN ONE. HE APPEARS TO BE A GOOD CANDIDATE TO LIFT FROM BRUTALITY…HAVE HIM SEND IN AN APPLICATION. ZARDOZ HAS SPOKEN.
Humane. The word comes from Human for a reason. Get rid of people and you get rid of Humane behavior. Most animals engage in behavior that is considered sadistic and sociopathic in nightmarish proportions.
I dont get western oikophobes or pure misanthropes. Ok, I kinda get misanthropes to some degree but not the ‘cleanse the earth of humanity’ types.
I just want to cleanse humanity from my lawn.

And the shooters need to pay better respect to no-gun zones.

I don’t ever use twitter, facebook or anything other than somewhat anonymous message boards to share my views. I can’t imagine what stupid shit I’m sure I’ve said in the past that would get me in trouble these days.
I’m really waiting for the cruial moment that a company says “fuck you” to the tiny screeching professionally offended crowd and sticks by their employee. How long would the backlash last? 2 days? 3 days? At least until Trump calls another country a shithole? Speaking of which, remember when Trump called a few countries shitholes and everyone got all offended by it? Neither do I.
When will companies/individuals learn that they literally only need to weather the storm for 48 hours… maybe 72 hours before everyone will forget that you even existed in the first place. No need to apologize, or even say anything at all, really.
crucial* Jesus fuck
No need to apologize, or even say anything at all, really.
That’s understating things, really. The apology is fuel for the mob. Think of them as bullies, and you won’t go too far wrong. The apology tells them their outrage is having an effect, that the target is justified. When bullies know they’re got people cornered, that’s when they’re least likely to relent. The apology is a license for the mob to step up their game.
I totally agree. It gives them that wonderful rush of “ah, we fucking got ’em! We did something good!” Wanting that more of that self-righteous feeling, they become emboldened. Fuck ’em, I doubt they even buy your product.
Way OT, but since I was browsing the earlier links to catch up on the happenings, I’m so damn sick of the identity politics horseshit. I love comic book movies (yeah I said it). I just enjoy the suspension of disbelief and believing in heros and shit, despite my overwhelming cynicism. So I was…am…excited to see Black Panther, but all this identity politics crap is making me fear for it. I really, REALLY, hope that people are clinging to it just because the characters are black and for no it he reason, but the article this morning was just abhorrent. The notion that some idiot somewhere finds it so refreshing that a white kid could see past the hero’s skin color is lunacy. How can you live in such a bubble? People give a good goddamn about that shit anymore except some fringe groups. Stop ruining the fantasy/sci-fi stuff I love you maniacs.
I thought Luke Cage on Netflix was pretty good. I didn’t sit there and think “I’m so great for getting past these character’s skin color, wow, look at me!”
Its a decent show, fun to watch. People are seriously deranged.
I’m not seeing Black Panther in theatres, because I’m tired of all theatres being transformed into marvel movie showing stations. I know I’m exaggerating, but seriously I’m getting kind of sick of all the superhero movies. I’ll check it out when it comes out on Amazon rental, just like I did with Thor and Captain America.
The notion that some idiot somewhere finds it so refreshing that a white kid could see past the hero’s skin color is lunacy.
They find it refreshing because so many of their “allies” specifically see individuals as racial atoms. They find it refreshing because they’ve told the assembled progressive cadres that race/sex/whatever is the sum total of their existence. As such, where the white kid just sees a cool superhero, the progressive collectivists see identity deference.

Supposedly Trump is going to endorse a 25 cent gas tax hike (more than double) to pay for the proposed sure to be boondoggle infrastructure plan. There are a few things I like about the guy but his big government leanings are concerning.
https://www.cnbc.com/2018/02/14/trump-reportedly-endorses-25-cent-hike-in-gas-tax.html
Fuck that. If they’d quit raiding the absurd amount they already take in for fuel taxes and dumping it into the general fund, there would be PLENTY for infrastructure.
If he endorses and it’s passed he certainly won’t get my vote.
Well that’s awful.
It’s really hard for me to bitch about a price (rather than a rate) that hasn’t changed in 25 years. I’m certainly in favor of usage fees as opposed to horrible ideas like income and capital gains taxes.
+0.25
Time to replace the gas tax with a mileage tax. Fuckers in Priuses and Teslas aren’t paying their fair share.
And they ain’t reducing greenhouse gases any more than truck drivers do.

They’d better put him at the back of the line.
What the fuck?
They shut down traffic on the toll road to make way for the shooter’s ambulance.
On the Sawgrass? That’s weird.
Sounds like they want him alive for whatever reason. I can see people deliberately blocking that ambulance if word got out.
Normally they are perfectly happy to have a dead perp, makes things easier.
They took him to the same hospital as 4 of his victims. He’s gonna need quite a bit of security.
Yep. Just checked a link via Drudge. 12 dead, and early reports are no one was surprised the guy went violent. Why can’t these disturbed assholes just off themselves?

Half of the ‘Libertarian’ Party candidates have endorsed socialized medicine. True story
I would like to think that you are exaggerating but…
There was the guy in Virginia and New Hampshire that I can remember off hand. The guy in New Hampshire did, in fact, cost the Republicans that Senate seat, because the Libertarian Party candidate was so bad that dissenting libertarians ran a counter independent candidate. This all according to TOS
That’s pathetic. So is the LP playing Eleventy Dimensional Chess and trying to split socialist votes off the Dems?

OT: Alright, nerds, I need some advice. Two things.
First, I’m disconnecting gradually from Google. The mail bit is done (thanks to personal servers and Lavabit), the music part is easy, but I do have a paid Google Drive subscription. I’ve got two contenders. One is Spideroak, which I like because of the encryption, and the other is One Drive, which I like because I’m a Windows guy and if I’m going to buy into another ecosystem it might be nice for it to be tied into my OS so that doing fresh installs isn’t a nightmare. Also, for a relatively low price you get a ton of storage and access to Office, which might be handy.
Second, I’m planning on upgrading my PC. It’s primarily for gaming, close second for web development. I’ve currently got a i5 4600k oc’d to 4.3ghz, 16gb DDR3, a bunch of hard drives, an SSD with my os as my C: drive, and two GTX 970s. I have an Oculus Rift that I use moderately, so VR is a concern. I don’t have and won’t likely by a 4k monitor, but I wouldn’t rule it out. I’m looking pretty much for more eye candy and smoother performance across the board. My upgrade contenders are: i7 8700k + mobo combo; GTX 1080; 16GB more DDR3 and an M.2 SSD to turn into the new C: drive. What’s the best one to start with? Which should I not bother with?
“First, I’m disconnecting gradually from Google”
DAMN RIGHT SON
The GTX 1080 will make the biggest difference in terms of gaming, but I’ve heard they’re hard to find for a reasonable price these days because of cryptocurrency mining, but I haven’t checked.
The i7 will help a lot if you’re streaming or doing some sort of video recording while you game, but otherwise your i5 should continue to do you well for a gaming rig.
16gb of RAM in addition to the 16gb you already have? Is that even necessary? I don’t game at massive resolutions like 4k or install huge high-res texture packs so maybe 32gb is the new standard but holy shit that’s a lot.
Plain ol’ 1080s are going for anywhere from $700 to $900, so depending on your definition of reasonable… I don’t think I’d fool with the 1070 if I were going to replace my current setup. The 1080TIs, though, are off the charts. Even if I had the dough I couldn’t justify it. Thing is, I’m running the 970s in SLI and I want to go back to a single card setup, plus I want the memory for texture quality.
The reason I’m thinking about the processor upgrade is because I’m afraid that between the SLI and hard drives and so forth I’m bottlenecking at the CPU. I’ve also read that VR stuff is very CPU intensive. The i7 8’s are six-core processors, so that would be a big upgrade potentially.
I actually run a single GTX 970 and its had a good run, but I recently played Wolfenstein 2 and had to turn the settings down to “high” (which is really medium, when you look at how many settings there are), so I’ve decided to upgrade too.
But I’m waiting for whatever generation comes out after the 1080. I agree that the 1070 is not worth the upgrade. I just don’t like upgrading one generation at a time, I always feel the need to skip a generation.
I have an i7 4800k and its fantastic — I can run the Witcher 3 maxed out while also streaming @ 1080p and video recording to my hard drive all at the same time, so obviously the i7 8 series will serve you well.. but I don’t know if its really worth it.
Keep in mind all of this is on a 1080p monitor – so no 4k stuff for me.
In summary, your upgrade will obviously achieve what you want it to, but you’re going to pay a pretty penny for it. You might be able to save some money on the CPU and RAM, but then you wouldn’t be “future proof”.
My brother and i both have 1070s, mine with a i5-4 series, his with an i7-6 series, and they will run 4k games at medium settings. However, my upgrade was from a 660 with 2GB of VRAM, to the 8GB 1070. I doubt an upgrade to s non SLI setup 1080 will be that much better than two 970s.
I was thinking about writing an article about my gradual disconnect from Google. I’m not as far along as you are, but I’m using Dropbox and Amazon prime for storage. Prime for photos and videos, Dropbox for documents and files.
Please do. I’m very curious.
Google is evil, and I’m seriously reconsidering if it’s a necessary evil.
It’s necessary, in that in the modern world if you’re going to have a phone you’re either dealing with Apple or Google, and neither of them is anything good.
If you’re OK with Microsoft, OneDrive makes some sense, but I’ve stopped using it myself – but you’ve clearly got reasons that work for you.
SpiderOak is good – no complaints there. In my case, I also maintain some offshore (about as ‘clear’ of USG interference as possible) storage (20Gb) for syncing between machines. All the data is encrypted at client, and while there’s a performance cost it’s very convenient. Once I’m confidant of the local encryption, I might consider moving that store to somewhere that is under US jurisdiction, and just let them try and decrypt it.

The most distant stars you can see with the naked eye are less than 10,000 light years away and odds are no more than a handful out of the roughly 10,000 stars visibile with the naked eye are currently dead, also the light did not originate millions or billions of years ago, the oldest light you can see with the naked eye originated around the time humans were discovering agriculture and domesticating dogs.
Unless it’s a dark moonless night and you can make out Omega Centauri (~1600 ly) or the Andromeda Galaxy (~2.5M ly) and even then these are dim cotton balls of light and not distinct points of light.
More noxious bullshit about “inequality”
Growing inequality in the U.S. and labor automation could put a quarter of the U.S. workforce out of a job by the end of next decade, according to management consulting firm Bain & Co. That could put a chokehold on economic growth.
To address that threat, the firm proposes the kind of solution not often heard from corporate advisers like Bain: Take from the rich and distribute some of those resources to the rest of the country.
——–
“What happens to that bottom group is you have to be, essentially, cheaper than a robot,” she added.
That in turn will feed existing inequalities, including eroding the middle class. The result will be “deeply unbalanced economies in which income is concentrated among those most likely to save and invest, not consume,” according to the report. The imbalance will effectively cap demand, leaving the economy at a standstill.
That seemingly paradoxical result occurs because higher-income people, on average, don’t spend as much of their income as those who earn less. When wealthy people gets an income boost, they’re more likely to save or invest that additional money, whereas a poorer person is more likely to spend it. Consider that the U.S. economic expansion during the last century, and more recent expansions in China and India, were driven largely by the growth of the middle class.
Rich people may not spend as much of their income as a percentage, but in actual dollar amount? I’m pretty sure it’s more substantial than a night out at Applebee’s once a month. And, once again, “saving and investment” is treated as if those people bury their hundred dollars bills in coffee cans in the back yard.
Gaaah!
“When wealthy people gets an income boost,”
I’m sure a robot would use better English. And have a better grasp of economics, too.

For example, the old standard was: Private (grunt), Corporal (squad leader), Sergeant (platoon leader), maybe a rocker for Master Sergeant. Easy to identify command structure. But set a pay scale more based upon performance and seniority with many more gradations, even within rank.

“Warren says Trump ‘will never take’ away her Native American heritage
Sen. Elizabeth Warren reaffirmed her claims of Native American heritage during an address to community leaders on Wednesday, pushing back against President Donald Trump’s attacks on her ethnicity in the most expansive explanation yet about a controversy that has dogged her since her 2012 election campaign.
In a surprise visit to the National Congress of American Indians in Washington, the Massachusetts Democrat responded to those who have accused her of misleading voters about her ethnic background, according to prepared remarks of the address.
“You won’t find my family members on any rolls, and I’m not enrolled in a tribe,” Warren said. “And I want to make something clear. I respect that distinction. I understand that tribal membership is determined by tribes — and only by tribes. I never used my family tree to get a break or get ahead. I never used it to advance my career.””

Dig those heels in, Lizzy! Don’t let them steal your glorious Pow Wow Chow culture!
She literally contributed to a book called “Pow Wow Chow”. Can you imagine if a Republican candidate who claimed to be Native American, and benefited in the job market because of such a claim, contributed to such a book?
And she plagiarized the recipes.
Well, it’s not like she had any experience growing up cooking Native American food.
I heard she gave them the recipes and then asked for them back.
Burn!
It wasn’t even anything actually Indian, like frybread or succotash or pemmican. It was a French recipe for omelets with crab.
Did the book at least have a recipe for Puppy Chow? Cause that’s so good eatin’.
Don’t treat your puppy like a dog, dog, dog — no no NO! Give them Puppy Chow.

No, I don’t believe I can.
I wish I could find a copy of that book and discover that it had Chief Wahoo on the cover.
Oh, and her recipe was lifted from the New York Times, which stunned me because I thought omelets with crab meat were a traditional staple of Cherokee cuisine.
She has the exact same problem as Hillary Clinton. This would have been over years ago if she had just apologized.
She’s utterly incapable of admitting that she did anything wrong, thus insuring that this will still be an issue when she runs for reelection.
OF COURSE she didn’t apologize! She’s special. Elevating her career is a moral and ethical imperative. If calling herself an Indian is what was needed to make that happen, well, then, that was justified. You don’t think she should be held to the same standards as the money-grubbers and little people, do you?
Holy. Fucken. Shit. SHE’S DOUBLING DOWN ON THAT CRAP?
And HOW!
Once she gives a statement like that, she can’t take it back.
“Marc Williams” in the threads is defending her hard for some reason.
Apparently, she’s Native and she didn’t benefit from it and that’s that. He wants proof otherwise.

“Professor Uses ‘N-Word,’ Student Shouts ‘F-You,’ ‘Free Speech’ Class Canceled at Princeton”
http://www.weeklystandard.com/professor-uses-n-word-student-shouts-f-you-free-speech-class-canceled-at-princeton/article/2011560
Einstein and Gödel used to teach there.
The article strongly suggests that the professor’s use of the word was strictly academic: “One report, cited in Princeton’s main campus newspaper, says that Rosen asked, ‘What is worse, a white man punching a black man, or a white man calling a black man a n****r?'”
The more ridiculous part is this:
A male student of color stood up, inches from professor Rosen’s face and shouted “FUCK YOU,” this witness claimed. Just before that, a female student of color had shouted at Rosen, as the first was approaching, “do you feel safe right now.”
This is the sort of behavior that students in one of the country’s most prominent universities feel free engage in. Not really that long ago, in a slightly saner time, that’s the sort of behavior that would get your ass thrown out of school quicker than you could say “intimidating a professor”. My read is until that happens again, this sort of thing is only going to get worse.
Good for him. Too bad his car will be on blocks next week.

“Einstein and Gödel used to teach there.”
Back when it was harder to get in.
today I learned
the cost of equipping 1 US soldier, adjusted for inflation
WW2: $170
Vietnam: $1100
Now: $27,000
ratio of wounded to killed
WW2: 2.5 to 1
Vietnam: 3 to 1
Now: 8 to 1
typical combat load
WW2: 35 lbs
Vietnam: 35 lbs
Now: 75 lbs
The WW2 figure seems low. The unit cost of the rifle was $85 at the time.
I imagine the rifle was the most expensive piece of equipment a WWII infantryman had. It’s not like they were wearing Kevlar.
Are you sure it’s inflation adjusted? $85 rifle is $500 today according to inflation calculator.
If it’s not, it explains a lot.
75 lbs for a patrol – if you are going back a base camp. Add a lot more if you are going to bivouac for a a few days.
The costs are definitely not adjusted for inflation and it’s not mentioned anywhere in the graphic. Given the source is the DoD which has an incentive to increase budgets it might make some sense. That’d also be why they’re using the incredible deceptive circle size comparisons. What is the reference point for a circle representing the wounded ratio. Also converting a killed:wounded ratio into a percentage makes very little sense. The whole graphic is a mess.
Costs are based on 2006 dollars. I saw the same figures on a different version of that graphic.
***
As Washington lawmakers argue over the spiraling price of the war in Iraq, consider this: Outfitting a soldier for battle costs a hundred times more now than it did in World War II.
The cost was $170 in 2006 inflation-adjusted dollars then, about $17,500 now and could be an estimated $28,000 to $60,000 by the middle of the next decade.
“The ground soldier was perceived to be a relatively inexpensive instrument of war” in the past, said Brig. Gen. Mark Brown, head of the Army agency for developing and fielding soldier equipment.
Now, the Pentagon spends tens of billions of dollars annually to protect troops and make them more lethal on the battlefield.
In the 1940s, a GI went to war with little more than a uniform, weapon, helmet, bedroll and canteen. He carried some 35 pounds of gear that cost $170, according to Army figures.
That rose to about $1,100 by the 1970s as the military added a flak vest, new weapons and other equipment during the Vietnam War.
***
link
The 170USD@2006 figure is sourced to Army Materiel Command or the Center For Strategic and Budgetary Assessments but I can’t find the original source. GlobalSecurity.org (credited in the image) is now defunct. I’ve seen unit costs between 80USD and 40USD sometime between pre-WWII until 1945 for the M1 which adjusted to 2006 using the most generous interpretation (40USD@1945) blows the $170 budge by several hundred dollars. According to this museum source, Springfield was able to get down to $26.25 per rifle in 1944 but that still converts to $300.64 in 2006. And that’s with Springfield producing the rifles at essentially zero profit as a government run factory compared to Winchester which hit the lowest billable cost of $43.50 in July 1944.
As a reference point assuming the numbers are not inflation adjusted:
WWII 170.00USD@1945 -> 1,904.00USD@2006
VietNam 1,112.00USD@1975 -> 4,166.90USD@2006
Compared to 17,472.00USD@2006 for current operations that is still a noticeable increase but far less dramatic.
Given that the sourced image does not clarify dollar values and that the costs of just rifles seem to blow the budget I’m inclined to believe the AP messed up.

Here is a story from my own personal life. The realization that I might be somewhat masculine occurred to me as a sort of torpid eureka while hitting a bong on the spongy couch of the big frame house on North Main Street where I lived with three friends my senior year in college. I will not claim that I had considered myself particularly femme before that, but I would never be confused for an alpha male. I’d been a musical theater kid in high school; I’d done drag, although only once, badly, at a themed party. I hadn’t played a sport since junior high; I did not go to the gym; I was whip-thin and had an arch affect that I’d picked up from movies and plays about an older generation of gay men. But here I was in sweatpants, smoking weed, watching a football game, and getting ready to head across the street to the lot beside the Boys & Girls Club, where we’d play ugly games of pickup basketball.
Because I’d thought of myself as a political radical—a queer political radical—discovering in myself some theretofore unrealized butch-ness felt like it traduced an important principle of my being. (Or, as Peterson would put it, dumbly aping Heidegger, my Being.) It was only exacerbated when, a few years out of school, I bought a cheap house and discovered an affinity for home improvement. It turned out that I could replace the belts on a dryer, solder a pipe joint and replace a ceiling fan. Worse, I rather enjoyed it all. But I still cry at the opera.

High school students ban national anthem from pep rallies.
***
The Star Spangled Banner will no longer be played at rallies at California High School in San Ramon after student leaders determined the song is racially insensitive.
“It was brought to our attention that the national anthem’s third verse is outdated and racially offensive, wrote the president of the school’s Associated Study Body. “We had nothing but good intentions by removing the song so that we could be fully inclusive to our student body.”
…
The student body president posted a letter on the high school’s website defending the decision to ban the song by citing a third verse that references “the hireling and slave.”
There is widespread debate among historians as to what Francis Scott Key was alluding to in the lyrics. Regardless, only the first verse is traditionally sung at sporting events or public gatherings.
“This verse translated, finds joy in the killing of African-Americans,” the student government president alleged. “To think that our nation’s anthem once had the word slave and ‘land of the free’ in the same sentence leaves me speechless.”

Harvard University class focuses on ‘omnipresent’ feces in French literature
***
Harvard University has a class that focuses solely on feces.
The Ivy League professor who teaches the class was not available to comment, but the course description is clear: “This course proposes to take this fecal presence seriously and to attend to the things it has to tell us…”
Annabel Kim, Assistant Professor of Romance Languages and Literature at Harvard, teaches the four-credit course “Cacaphonies: Toward an Excremental Poetics” which features “a diverse range of scatological texts” from the 20th and 21st centuries.
“French literature, from the Middle Ages to today, has been consistently and remarkably scatological,” the class description reads. “Fecal matter is omnipresent in works and authors that we consider canonical (e.g. the fabliaux, Rabelais, de Sade, Beckett, Celine) and yet its presence has been remarkably submerged or passed over in readerly and critical reception of modern and contemporary French literature.”

No, because putting a bunch of people in an incredibly hostile environment for no greater purpose than making an insipid social statement is a pretty surefire way to ensure that everyone who goes there dies a miserable, painful death, and that interplanetary exploration and colonization dies in the crib.
It’s only as a money-making venture that a Mars colony is at all likely to prove anything other than a suicide mission and is likely to have any chance of success. This is something that the bulk of human history of colonization has demonstrated. And personally, I’ll take the weight of human history as a better means of assessment than this morons aesthetics.

This is a more accurate assessment. But, for the sake of argument, I’m willing to suspend disbelief. Maybe there is some “magic” technology that will effectively make space travel a practical reality. Without some sort of means to make it actually profitable, all you’ll wind up doing is sending people to die on another rock.
Good. Profit means a venture is sustainable. Loss means it isn’t. If Mars is to be colonized, it must be profitable.
Isn’t that assuming that rich people will want to go to Mars?
St. Heinlein postulated that the Moon would be a popular spot for geriatrics due to the 1/6 G gravity. Seems very reasonable to me.

Niven/Pournelle have spoken similarly about the asteroid belt – once you’re gravity free, a lot less stresses on some parts of the body – course…for most people it’d wind up being permanent.

I think that was the idea. Go there to live out your days in relative comfort..

Shortly after the last presidential election, my wife, Rahnee, resolved to emerge from her paralyzing funk by joining the millions of others who were performing acts of political resistance in their own little way. So she went online and ordered a bunch of plastic bags for picking up dog poop. Emblazoned on each bag is the face of Donald Trump.
A big box arrived of what must’ve been a thousand bags. That’s how pissed off Rahnee was. And here we are more than a year later and we’ve still got a whole bunch of bags left. We’re hoping the Trump on the dog poop bags will be around a lot longer than the Trump in the White House. Regardless, whenever the nightmare is over, we intend to donate a bag to the Trump presidential library. We’re still deciding whether or not it should be a used bag.
The bags bring a new element of fun and satisfaction to the daily routine of walking our dogs. We’re not just cleaning up after them. We’re also making a statement. When the bags are full, they’re quite symbolic.
But I’m not deluding myself. I know that, in the long run, acts of resistance are ultimately judged according to their effectiveness. Thus, even though picking up dog poop in Trump bags makes us feel righteous, it provides only symptomatic relief while doing little to attack the underlying disease.
No matter how much poop we defiantly scoop, it won’t stop Trump’s dastardly agenda from moving forward. Too bad resistance isn’t that easy. Wouldn’t it be great if every time somebody unfurled and used a Trump dog poop bag, it knocked some sense into the presidential cranium, until he became transformed, like Scrooge? Oh, how I wish our bags had that kind of fantastic voodoo power—except that in this case it would probably be called doo-doo power.

young woman asks former classmate for favor; becomes subject of rant

“No, this upper-middle-class white girl did not just ask me to help her get famous.”
That was the first thought that ran through my head after receiving an e-mail from a former classmate I had just run into at a party asking me for professional help.
“This is a long shot, but,” this woman wrote to me in an e-mail, the subject line of which began with “Help?,” “I’m writing because you mentioned that you are one of the new staff members at Everyday Feminism, and…”
She then preceded to ask me to advertise her blog to my new job’s 250k+ Facebook followers, a blog she had decided to make feminist three days ago just so I could advertise it for her.
I stared at the e-mail for a hot minute, astonished at the depth of entitlement that lay bare before me, a level of entitlement I didn’t even know existed – and I spent four years at an Ivy League university.
…
I watched her run around campus talking mad junk about radical politics, oppression, and resistance – and yet not one bit of her $250,000 degree in Africana studies seemed to make any meaningful dent in her consciousness when it comes to living anti-oppression in life.
…
Because struggling through poverty, racism, sexism, and class oppression isn’t enough – I need to carry her on my back as well. In this woman’s mind, I am some thing that exists only to serve her in her great big middle-class white girl dreams of fame and glory.
Well, I have news for her and every other middle-class former classmate trying to act out their elitist and dehumanizing values on me:

Because of those high stakes, it’s probably not the best idea to entrust the selection of the crew to capitalist forces. If we look at the exploration of Mars through a capitalist lens, then only the richest among us will be able to go to the red planet and what they do there will also be oriented toward profit-making.

Settlers get ornery when they haven’t gone drilling for oil in a while y’know?

FBI says Chinese operatives active at scores of U.S. universities

Eat a dick, Wray.
Christ, what an asshole!
Well, he’s probably not wrong. Why wouldn’t China be using any means they could to collect information? Knowledge is power, and the government of China seems to recognize that.
Of course, Wray could be inflating things, since he wants resources for the FBI to keep track of this. The Confucius Institute is an arm of the communist government, so it probably wouldn’t hurt to keep tabs on it to some degree.
And the Fulbright Program is an arm of the American government, yet we would be outraged if American professors visiting other countries to teach for a year were all treated as potential spies. Of course, Wray is also counting on the ignorance of Joe Sixpack concerning the existence of SEVIS and what it entails. If the agents of the insidious Dr. Fu Manchu are getting in, that’s not academia’s fault, but the FBI, CIA, and the rest of the “intelligence community’s” fault.
It is extremely distasteful to froth up the Yellow Peril to get more tax dollars. I hope Wray dies of bone cancer.
I have heard some fucked up stuff about Chinese Students and Scholars Associations which are affiliated with their Embassies and have pretty strong ties with the Party. Mostly political repercussions back home if you dare speak ill of the regime. And I thought the “thousand grains of sand” strategy was well known?
And that mainly involves publicly stamping their feet and having a hissy fit if someone like the Dali Lama is invited to campus. Seeing how domestic students act when, say, Milo Y. is invited to speak, this should ease your fears. They’re just like us!
The riots that were mostly lead by BAMN? Pushing students to execute a political agenda is a problem no matter who the master is. Whether it’s communist officials from a foreign country or faculty who are members of a terrorist group. Talk about damning with faint praise.
And yet, the Republic still stands.
Even with an FBI Director deserving of bone cancer apparently.
Great, now I have to be scared of Russians under my bed and Chinese in my school. The government need to do something about this.
Today I read most of The Green Brain by Frank Herbert. It’s a fun little bit of sci-fi.
It would make for a decent movie.
Most of Frank Herbert’s non Dune early stuff is tight (and like most SF of the period – nice and short and well written. Ie. magazine version first, then novella, then short novel variation. I’ve got multiple published versions of books like “Under Pressure” – from short story to novel.
Also the Dosadi Experiment (Jorj X. McKie), Jesus Incident trilogy, etc.
This was another local state legislature special election, so I don’t know how telling the result is. The article talks about how the Democrats have flipped 36 seats since Trump’s election, but most of these have been state level where the Republicans lead by 900 seats. A blue wave may be coming, but the evidence for it is not as strong as the news is trumpeting.
“but the evidence for it is not as strong as the news is trumpeting”
The dismally embarrassing performance of the news at predicting the outcome of the 2016 races is reason enough to take what they say with a gigantic boulder of salt.
^This.
Putting aside the Trump victory – the Dems were predicting taking the House and Senate as well back in summer 2016. Then in the fall it was “well, maybe not the House, but definitely the Senate”, then it was “not the House, senate is a tossup, but White House is a lock.”
The Dems advantage in polls is dropping though.
The political takes are flying fast and heavy!
I mean, fuck the NRA, but…
Looks like the Trump Slump is gonna come to an end.

No. Stupid, but not libel.
This is all that needs to be said.
That might be the most horrifying thing you have ever posted.

My first thought on seeing that person’s picture: Is that an ugly, fat woman or an ugly, fat man?
After reading some of that page, I’ve come to a realization related to guns and ammunition. I need to buy more.
I didn’t know the NRA wanted teens to shoot other teens.
Of course they do, it’s part of their business plan.
1) teens shoot teens
2)
3) Profit!
Glib linguists, what would be the best latin translation of either copper book or book of copper in the most concise and pithy phrase?
Aerarius liber. Aerarius is an attributive adjective so it comes before the noun. Latin adjectives usually come after the noun.
so what happens if the word order is reversed? Is it just wrong, or does the meaning change?
In this case, it would be ungrammatical.
YOU’RE UNGRAMMATICAL
Hey, it was an honest answer to an honest question.
yOuRe UnGrAmMaTiCaL
So my inclination to start the titles of the set with ‘Liber’ would be grammatically incorrect? (the series being fictional books within the setting.)
For reference, in the draft so far the books were ‘Liber Aurum;, ;Liber Argentum’, and ‘Liber Ferrum’. Probably has something to do with my ear being not attuned to the proper rules and thinking it ‘sounds better’.
No, just for the word “aerarius”. It still would be “liber aureus” “liber argentum” etc.. Doing some quick research, Late Latin did use “cuprum” for copper, which makes sense…so if it doesn’t have to be Classical Latin, you could use Liber Cuprum.
Thank you.
If you move into medieval church latin, you have a lot more opportunity to serve up poor grammar. Lots of ecclesiastical scholars were pumping out quite ungramattical stuff.
And aureus is the masculine form, so you need to use -us to agree with the masculine gender of liber. Ferrum, agrentum and I’m guessing cuprum only have the neuter form.
Noted.
As a side comment, machine translation says “Liber Argentum” is “Free Money”
Which made me wonder why book and liberty share a similar root.
A quick check says they don’t share roots.
I shouldn’t say it’s weird that completely different words have identical spellings and probably very similar pronounciations. Given English’s collection of homonyms.
Just two words that happened to end up looking like each other, though pronounced differently.

To all Glib Arizonans, former Arizonans and others, Happy Statehood Day! In 1912 AZ was admitted to the Union after eight unsuccessful attempts. They last failed because despite President Taft’s warning they put the initiative, referendum and recall into the proposed state constitution. After Gary Johnsonville was admitted January 1912 and they were vetoed the legislature rewrote the constitution removing those three provisions. After Taft signed the first amendments after statehood put them right back in.
It was a great state to grow up in. A young kid riding his bike out to the desert to hunt with a weapon over his back drew no police and no stares. On the political front Barry Goldwater removes most of the stain left by McCain and Deconcini.
Why are we not teaching teens to attack and overwhelm a single shooter?
All this footage of teenagers running out with their hands up and being screamed at by SWAT. The whole things stinks of submission.
Also, the way the media presents these stories: if I was planning a shooting, every time I saw this kind of footage I would fap
Hmm. That shouldnt have been a response
Indeed. It should have been, “if I were planning a shooting…”
I were planning on writing If I were

They put a statue of an angel at the top of the copper dome at the state capital. Rumor had it, it would rotate as the winds shifted. This disappointed locals on days when there was no wind. So Arizonans did the rational thing, and pulled out their guns to shoot the angel on top of the copper dome. Then it would turn.
They taught us in school the reason AZ became a state on Valentines Day, was because a number of people in Washington DC were opposed to allowing it to become a state. Since they wanted to avoid such an egregious error on Lincolns birthday they delayed it a day. Since 13 is bad luck, they delayed it once more.
Remember children, it’s GUN violence; which is way more violently violent than regular violence. GUN violence is super especially mega evil, specially when an ASS-SALT WEPUN is used. When a poor, tragic refugee runs over people in a semi truck, that’s really sad because he’s misunderstood; he just doesn’t understand that in our culture it’s not ok to run people over in a semi truck. We need to respect his culture by being tolerant of his expression of frustration. Evil, Nazi, gun-toting, redneck, deplorable, knuckle-dragging, cousin-humping Trumpsters using their evil child-killing death sticks to compensate for their embarrassingly tiny genitals is so much worse than the Spanish Inquisition + The Black Plague + The Holocaust. I’m sooper cereal.
Days like this remind me why I’m not on FB and Twitter.
Because you have a life?
That’s my excuse, plus I hate people (except you folks…well, most of you). ?
They can rant and rave, but the more dangerous and evil and openly in love with tyranny the left has become, the more impossible any kind of gun control measures will be. I mean, they can certainly pass them, but actually trying to enforcement them will probably just be the last straw before civil war.

Welp, it’s official – the mutt more than likely has liver cancer. We’d have to do a sonogram to be sure, but she’s in liver failure and given the rest of her symptoms the vet is almost certain she has a tumor. The one silver lining is that he said she doesn’t seem to be in pain. Not a surprising outcome. At least we gave it the ol’ college try.
That sucks.
Sorry, dude.
Ugh. Sorry, man.
I hate to hear it. You have my empathy & sympathy. Been down that road.
Sorry to hear, Life with Dogs can break your Heart, Give her a kiss for me…
Sorry.
Damn, sorry to hear that.
Sorry to hear man. That blows.
Our Shepherd was diagnosed with lymphoma last year and our vet put him on prednisone. For several months, he showed no symptoms of having cancer at all. The swelling went down and his activity levels went up. I’m not sure if that’s an option with a liver tumor since the liver converts prednisone to prednisolone which does the actual magic, but maybe that’s ideal for your pup. There were side effects: our guy was thirsty and hungry ALL THE TIME, and as a result he gained some weight. But otherwise, we got several extra months with him when he was in no pain at all so we could stuff him with steaks and cheeseburgers and pizza, and get in more walks and ball catching time. We still lost him in the end, but he went out a very happy guy.
I hope your pup is as lucky. Losing a dog SUCKS.
Unless she starts eating, it’s a moot issue. She has barely eaten anything for two weeks. Can’t even get her to take her usual meds (Tramadol for her arthritis pain, Vetoryl for her Cushing’s disease. We’ve made an appointment with home euthanasia on Monday. If she starts eating between then and now, we can cancel and try treatment, but I’m not holding out any hope of that.
Nice Prius – Now Pay Up: Maine to Green Car Owners
We all saw this coming. Maine, recognizing that hybrids don’t pay their fair share of taxes, wants to up the registration fees to compensate.
Lol.
Wow, the Sierra Club has gone downhil. “Carbon Pollution” has a more accurate name “Plant Food”. Treehuggers should love it.
Couldn’t happen to a smugger group of people.
Is there a Prius EV? Because I’m pretty sure they’re all/mostly hybrids which means they burn gas the same as any other car, just not at the same rate.
Hybrids are not noticably more efficient than certain economy gas vehicles. The cheaper cars have less weight to throw around (no second engine, no huge battery bloc), so get similar numbers. The key attribute is that the highway/city efficiency differential is flipped.
I would have to find a citation, but Im pretty sure that some of the compact TDI engines (VW, et al) give hybrids serious competition for (x)polluant/mile, particularly when it comes to cost, and durability.
My source is anecdotal – the efficiency I get from my C-Max.
I drive a 2016 chevy sonic to work. It’s a manual transmission with a 1.4L turbo. Driving 30 miles each way on a state hwy I get 42 mpg. I’m not sure how much more a primus gets, but I can guarantee you my car is a hell of a lot cheaper.
No question about it. Back in the old days I had a Honda CRX that regularly got over 50.
Of course it wasn’t loaded with ‘safety’ equipment either…
My sonic is pretty bare bones. Manual everything. Has a decent sound system ano traction control amd that’s about it. It suits my purposes just fine.
You know, come to think of it, my Passat does high 30s on the road as well. And that’s a pretty good sized car.
The new small turbos are pretty impressive.
Highway I get 36mpg
Blue Kia gets 40 Mpg Highway, Super cheap to operate
These numbers are the reason for my initial assertion that Hybrids don’t really get better milage.
I have a 7,300 lb. Ram2500 4WD CTD that gives me 19 mpg if I keep my foot out of it. I’m pretty happy.
Lol. My ‘Ecoboost’ has trouble cracking 20.
Pretty fast, though.
I have an 03 silverado z71 4wd that get 16. 16 period. It gets 16 taking it easy. It gets 16 pulling a stock trailor with 5000lbs of livestock in it. It gets 16 drag racing my buddies. It gets 16 coasting down a hill with the engine off.
i had a ’76 Dodge Ramcharger Full time 4 wheel drive, we measured in Feet per gallon
Yup. I get 19 mpg empty, and if I throw the 10,000lb trailer on it, I get 16. My buddy has a 2500 Chevy with a 351, and he can do 17-18 empty, but put my trailer on it, and it drops to around 8 mpg. I’m sure the ROI works out someplace, given the extra $4300 for the CTD.
350…what was I thinkin?
Nissan Leaf is pure electric, I don’t know if Toyota offers all electric yet or not
There’s a plug-in hybrid Prius. No pure EV one.
Which one of you Glibs did this
The most irritating thing about today was seeing people resurrect really stupid arguments where they show misleading headline stats for OECD countries and try to argue, “THEREFORE GUNS ARE WHAT IS CAUSING ALL THE CRIME IN US”
they posture like they actually are ‘investigating the statistics’ and trying to do some honest-analysis, when they’re actually starting with a conclusion and desperately trying to litter their commentary with graphs which vaguely seem to have something to do with it.
never mind that violent crime has fallen by 50% over the last 30 years, and guns have proliferated to 300% their amount at the violent crime peak.
this is before we even get into the shitshow that is “mass shooting” definitions
never mind that violent crime has fallen by 50% over the last 30 years, and guns have proliferated to 300% their amount at the violent crime peak.
Or that, at a county level, violent crime is strongly inversely correlated with legal gun ownership.
There are zero home invasion robberies where I live and very few break ins at all. There is a reason for this, and it ain’t because there are any cops around.
which is really just a way of saying, “rural places are less criminal”
Indeed. There are always confounding variables. However, crime rates are per capita and so are adjusted, in a linear fashion, for population.
even worse –
the alt-righty racist types come out of the woodwork to screech, “ITS TEH BLACKS” because its the one thing the homicide-stats floggers steadfastly refuse to ever address.
and the alt-righty types are actually correct. its one of the few things that they actually do get right, although they often go too far trying to then claim its genetic or related to IQ or blah blah blah.
If the regular, not-racist pretend-analyst types would simply go, “Ok, true – the murder rate is higher in the US mainly because of the whoppingly huge rate in certain poor inner cities”… they’d probably be able to rebut the racist motherfuckers and point out flaws in their own claims. But they don’t, and simply deny and handwave and do the Ed Kray, “Police is racist” type arguments which simply try to morally-posture their way around unpleasant details.
the reason i find it all so infuriating is that to me, the most interesting detail of my lifetime is, “why did violent crime fall 50% between 1993 and 2013”?
in my opinion its the single most poorly understood aspect of human behavior, and why it suddenly changed directions at a very specific inflection point. Yet despite all these morons waving numbers around, literally no one ever even attempts anything like a coherent and comprehensive examination of that question.
this guy wrote a book im going to read; and i think he makes one of the *better* attempts at an explanation. but i’m not sure. ive only watched an intervew w/ him on cpan so far
https://www.amazon.com/Rise-Fall-Violent-Crime-America/dp/159403835X
“why did violent crime fall 50% between 1993 and 2013”?
Does that book cover the lead-crime hypothesis? I know that’s a popular explanation and doesn’t seem to have had as many holes poked in it as “legal abortion/access to contraceptives” (lots of methodology issues and not replicated in other countries) or gun ownership (number of guns owned vs per capita ownership issues, survey methodology issues). My understanding is it’s assumed that there were many factors involved and no one single cause but lead-crime seems like one of the strong causes.
not that i know of.
Latzer is a John Jay U criminologist.
his argument (from the summary i saw @ his CSPAN interview) is that violent crime – and he separates violent crime out specifically, because unlike other kinds of crime it actually has a very low correlation to economic conditions – rises most dramatically when you have
1) groups of people forced into close proximity in a relatively short period of time – most significantly from some migration from one place to another
2) one or both of them has some legacy “honor culture” which differs from each other
i think there was a 3rd factor, but can’t recall what it is.
An interesting point was that when you have these cultural conflicts, it doesn’t result in group A killing people in group B, or B killing group A. It has people in group B killing other people in group B.
the basic case being that the ‘inferior group’ which is in a position of lower social + economic status has a strong imperative to exercise “Honor conflicts” which result in murder.
the examples he gave were in American crime booms of the late 19th century, the early 20th century, and the late 20th century. each was associated with significant group migration; the first after the civil war, the second mostly to do with mass-immigration from europe, and the last having to do with a large scale move of blacks from the south to rust belt and northern cities.
all of them involved ‘honor cultures’ (southerners, southern-europeans, and blacks – who Latzer argued inherited it from Southerners) coming into conflict with establishment cultures which basically said, “you’re inferior and you’re not ever going to succeed via normal channels”. So they formed inward-facing criminal cultures which attributed status to the more-violent people.
I found his case pretty compelling. At least in how, unlike other people, he used multiple variables and showed how they related w/ one another… and unlike other people, he doesn’t shy away from “culture” discussions, which most sociologists are utterly terrified of – either because they don’t know how to quantify it, or they fear being accused of racism , or whatever. I still don’t think he necessarily nails it 100%, but far better than most.
The Honor Culture is Huge with the Mexicans, et. al Catholics, it’s quite Barbaric, but what ya gonna do?
/I’m not blaming Catholics
You can read the original paper which is basically a fancy correlation study. And yes it does call out violent crime specifically (noting that lead exposure does not seem to correlate with property crime at all).
http://www3.amherst.edu/~jwreyes/papers/LeadCrimeBEJEAP.pdf
thanks
* i was just re-listening to the interview he did on CSPAN (terrible because he’s such a slow-talker and his interviewer has a ridiculous lisp)
… the ‘third factor’ in crime waves is the overwheming of the criminal justice system, where basically cops stop doing their jobs because they have too many cases. it becomes far more likely to get away with crimes.
apologies for the all-caps, but this is how CSPAN transcribes the video; in this instance he’s specifically talking about the 1970s, how the boom in the 1960s transitioned into a 2+ more decade-long violent crime-explosion:
“THE POLICE STARTED ARRESTING FEWER PEOPLE”
doesn’t follow from
If the point of the insight is that the system gets so bogged down that total numbers go down then don’t do a bait and switch to start talking about how rates go down. Arrests per complaint might be down while both arrests and complaints go up.
i can’t really speak to any of that as i haven’t read his book.
i’d maybe add that the CSPAN ‘auto transcriber’ actually repeats words phrases a lot and some of those might not have been typos
i doubt a career criminologist is making the sort of very-basic misstatement about data that you are assuming.
here’s an article in city-journal where he seems to discuss the same issue
https://www.city-journal.org/html/will-crime-spike-become-crime-boom-14710.html
“might (or might not)”
All of those are still claims about rate but summed up as if total arrests and convictions went down. The failure mode of “we have so much crime that we aren’t able to arrest and convict the same percentage as we used to” is very different from “we have so much crime we can’t even arrest and convict the same total number as before.” Decreased rate is still bad because it means more crime in total is unresolved, weakens strength of law etc, but isn’t in the same ball park as the justice system getting DDoS’d.
All the hard numbers are rates but zero numbers to back up a claim that total numbers of arrests and convictions went down. Given the general thrust of the article it seems more like a terminology issue. The things that seem relevant to him are arrests per complaint and the like and shortening to “fewer arrests” makes sense in that context. Uncharitably the interview and that article are pimping his book and attention grabbing inferences like “so much crime that the cops basically stopped doing their jobs” will certainly move product.
I just think your complaint is pedantic and premature given what you’re actually evaluating are just snippets from articles. it seems like you’re convinced there’s only one possible reading of ‘arrests went down’ (a total decline in arrests) when that’s not what he’s saying: he’s saying arrests as a percentage of crimes-reported declined.
i still don’t think it amounts to any serious objection to his core thesis, which isn’t at all proposing some ‘complete breakdown of the justice system’ but rather merely a decline in the ability to prosecute the bulk of crime that occurs.
I read the city journal article. I read the CSPAN transcript. I read his interview in The Atlantic. I read the Vox article about his book. I check the Bureau of Justice Statistics for total incarceration numbers which indicated a population dip between 1962 and 1974 on the order of 10,000s nation wide. The main takeaways I got from all of that is that he uses several catchphrases like “crime tsunami” that read to me like ad copy and consistently pushes that incarceration and strong policing reduce crime.
CSPAN
The Atlantic
That CSPAN program exists to push books. The other articles were summaries of the books conclusions either in interview (The Atlantic) or tied to a news item (City Journal, Chiefs Association report about crime uptick in 2016). Maybe the book is clearer on those points, but from what I can tell it seems more like a small exaggeration that gets clarified. The whole thrust of “the system is collapsing it can’t handle the sudden and massive increase in crime” (his words) sells the idea of lock more people up pretty well. Yes that’s one of several factors he claims but one of the only ones he offers a solution for.
I’ve done no research and have no reason to believe so but it has to have something to do with the lack of want. Sure people still want more but when even the poorest can have a 42″ flat screen is it worth mugging all day just so you can have the 60″
economic crimes – theft, etc. have a strong correlation to economic need.
violent crimes surprisingly do not. poor people may commit more violence overall than rich people, but its not quite that simple; murders and violence are far more rarely connected to some economic end than you’d think.
e.g. many robbery-homicides, when the crimes were analyzed in detail, were shown that the murders were committed for no other reason than the perpetrator was offended. it wasn’t to kill witnesses or anything, it was to show off to their friends/partners that they were ‘tough’.
this is something latzer talked about in detail and he seemed to really know his shit about it.
Okay but it still has to do with 42″ flat screens, criminals aren’t out killing people cause they can watch game of thrones.
i think there is an argument to be made that there is a poverty threshold where, when the lowest in society rise above it, you might see a dramatic fall in many sorts of crime. for exactly the reason you mention: even if there is great ‘inequality’, the bare minimums are satisfied so easily that there is plenty to distract people from petty conflict
but latzer made a pretty convincing case that violent crime – rape, murder, assault – really has little to do with ‘need’ and a lot to do with what might be better described as “cultural class-conflict”. Status + ego-driven
It’s quite obvious, actually.
1993 is when Phish really started to get big.

That’s not what it looks like when you get polygraphed. The examiner is asking the questions too fast and not asking any control questions.
I knew polygraphs were dumb, but it was even dumber than I expected.
To measure your dishonest response, they ask you to lie about a stressful event (ex: have you ever lost your temper?) and think about that event while answering.
Well, hold on a minute- couldn’t I just as well think about a relaxing event while lying? There’s no way to check that.
They warn you not to do anything physical or mental to alter your responses. Well hell, if I can throw the test by willpower, what good is it?
It’s slightly more scientific than palm reading and that’s the nicest thing I can say about it. Oh well. It was kind of cool- like being in a spy movie.
