Last Tuesday I finished a fourth round of interviews with a company, and haven’t heard a thing since. The total process had taken around 10 hours of my time (4.5 in interviews,5.5 in preparing a mock project for my final interview). Am I insane to expect some contact, good or bad. It seems super disrespectful and I’m pretty pissed.
I’m trying to craft an email to see what’s going on, but I can’t help but want to rage.
They have also invested a lot of time in you. They should have contacted you by now.
I’ve had the same thing happen a few times recently, but I haven’t gotten to that many interviews. I hear a lot of job seekers are “ghosting” potential employers, but it looks like it goes both ways.

If it was the 11th, I would give them more time. If it was the 4th, you should still give them more time, but should start thinking of how to re-engage.
Sadly, if one person happened to be on vacation, the whole process is going to grind to a halt.

Diversity considerations.. is the one where the hiring manager pulls their hair out while trying to make HR understand that the candidate with 15 years of experience backed up by solid successes is a better choice than the diversity candidate with 1 year experience?
My former boss received 67 credible applications to a job posting. The HR approver (of a certain race/gender) pulled 8 applications (of the same race/gender) and told my boss she was required to hire from among these 8 choices, none of which had competitive experience. My boss, who is female and raceblind, was livid.
Yeah, pretty much. Had a similar situation although we were able to get the person we wanted.
The boss should have told the other 59 applicants that HR was rejecting them for being the wrong race.
The company shouldn’t be liable; the HR person herself should be on the hook.

Last Tuesday as in the 4th? I’d send a polite follow up and ask if there was anything further they needed from you. It’s always a pain to get jerked around by companies when you’re interviewing. I’ve told the beer distributor sales job story before, but another one was getting through three rounds of interviews, trying to schedule a face to face interview to be abruptly told that the position was eliminated.
It takes very little time to say no.
It takes a long time to say yes. Delays generally mean that you are in the running, but that does not guarantee an offer.
You may also have been the first in a group of 2 or 3 candidates for the 4th interview. By the time the last finishes, the department decides, and then has to bend a knee before HR to grace their choice, I can easily see it taking that long. I know it has for final candidates in my department before receiving an offer.
It’s not so much the time, as the complete radio silence that is bothering me.
As Kinnath said, I’d take it to mean you’re still in the running. They’re not going to want to contact you without some decision (offer, rejection, another interview round).
I don’t know where you are interviewing, but in a big company, the hiring manager cannot tell you anything without prior approval from HR and upper management.
The last “internal” job I applied for took about 2 months to get a final rejection (the position went to someone else inside the company).
External hires can take several months of approvals up the management chain plus arguing with HR about compensation before an offer goes out.
You will hear nothing until a final decision to reject or issue an offer.
The wait is the hardest part but it doesn’t sound like that long a time to me.

My question is should I hire a lawyer before telling them we intend to cancel or cancel, try the BBB and other non-legal remedies first before hiring a lawyer if we aren’t refunded our deposit?

Start with the lawyer. Initial actions can have huge influence on how any legal battles play out.
You could try writing a letter laying out the issues and asking for a refund. Either it gets them off their ass, you get your $$$ back, or you know you have to go to a lawyer.
If it was me, I’d pay a lawyer a few hundred bucks to write that letter (probably more likely that they’d respond to that). But that’s up to you.

For a job of that size it always pays to have your own lawyer make a custom contract if they review the other party’s contract and it’s dogshit.
Also, a little hot tip for next time on a job that big: always have your contract outline clear completion milestones. A job that size shouldn’t warrant more than a 10k security deposit no matter what. It should be the job of a GC to act as a short term financier of the project until completion.

I have a contract, just not with me. It’s their standard contract. I’m going to look at it over the weekend with the wife and decide to try to get them to refund the money minus materials/work completed or just let a lawyer do it. My concern is how much legal cost vs recoverable money.
Tell you something, my wife and I began the process of a home addition via general contractor int a serious capacity back in August 2017. Fortunately, despite the excellent reputation, my GC’s standard contract was a half page embarrassment. I have an affordable lawyer that I always run personal and business law matters by as a default. He created a better contract, my GC wasn’t offended. Having a go-to lawyer like that really comes in handy for generic life stuff.
My point is, though, our project broke ground in October, we are basically 8 months beyond the original planned date of completion. Unless you design in penalties for delay, this shit can drag on forever.

If true they broke the law. I paid them in February and they didn’t start work until 6/2. To date all they have done is demo 2 small bathrooms and not finished them.

OT: but following up on leonadasiv posting about job stuff: I have an interview for a “real job” (in other words, one where someone else pays me, and I get a w-2), on Monday.
I am not thrilled about this job but it has 1. benefits and 2. the regular paycheck. The other two jobs that have my resume are a regular civil litigation firm, and the city attorney’s office.
So wish me luck (I guess? ) on Monday. I am totally qualified to do it, but I am sort of using it as a practice interview in case the other places call.
Either way, I’d miss those criminal clients (like the dude who has called me -4 times now! collect from jail).

Why I want a DVD or Blu-ray
This is why I don’t “buy” streaming movies. I can burn the music I buy from Amazon, and I have a way to crack and save my Kindle books, but I don’t have the tech know-how to pull a movie off, say, Amazon, and burn it.
Ouch yeah I am tied to Kindle. I haven’t, uh, investigated any way around that.
Do you have a Paperwhite or other Kindle device? Or do you read on your phone? I can possibly liberate those for you for permanent storage.
I use my iPhone.

I’d like to see proof of that, specifically for Kindles (not from you per se, just in general). I have a suspicion that the contract you sign specifically prohibits this.

The more I dig, the more conflicting info I see. I think the legality of format shifting would make a good article. I’m working through a textbook recently that is only readable with Adobe’s garbage software and I have had enough of that.

As I understand it, format shifting is fine. The TOOLS used to do it are legally iffy, though. And yes, I have tools to crack those PDFs and EPUBs, too.

I think you can technically do it by recording the stream with a screen-recorder, but it’d be a massive file initially – and if you moved the mouse around, you’d capture that as well. Nothing easy though – that’s the whole point of this stupid streaming thing.
I’ve seen some songs disappear periodically but I’ve been able to re-download them. But yeah, conceptually it sucks if Itunes loses their rights/contract with an individual company or something else and then the albums aren’t available if you need to redownload them due to computer failure, etc.
That’s why at this point I’m yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
(Although I was going to drink the rum anyway.)

If it’s a beloved movie or I know I’ll watch it more than once or it’s on the $5 rack at Walmart, I’ll buy the DVD.

How reliable is The Daily Mail, I’m reading this and it sounds like a National Enquirer piece, no names, very few locations, and it just defies belief, sensational doesn’t cover it.
