Snow…endless snow. Not sure if anyone will find these links. If they should, know that the Glibs held out as long as they could before resorting to cannibalism. I was the last…
OK, so the snow was an inconvenience. But thanks to snowblowers and shovels, and the working internet, there are links for all. Brett was tied up, burning down his old employer’s offices I think. Or stuffing pythons into their vents. Whichever. So you get my Links of Fimbulwinter;
- I did not realize that Warty Hugeman’s DOOMCOCK was going to open the Olympics! I hope the IOC has sent a royalty check to SugarFree.
- The Greatest Foreign Policy Success Ever continues to bear fruit. Do you think if Tillerson ever steps aside, we could get the old gang back together – Herself, Rice and Powers? Maybe have John Kerry pose for photo ops?
- Um…wut? Article I of the US Constitution – read it, Tim. Then you can see that you goofs are the ones who can. Nice to see some vague stirrings in Congress, to regain the tatters of their authority. Wonder why it took so long?
- Following up on a Morning Link. “Take leave“?! I guess your constituents can do without representation, eh? Note the wonderful weasel language she uses – Upon reflection of the details alleged, I am certain I did not engage in the behavior I am accused of… You did, or did not.
OK, so there you are. Try to stay warm and unburied.

Lotta high quality stuff in there today
Orgy.
Update to my entry on Glibfit earlier.
Wednesday I had the mid-routine exhaustion, completing two groups of 11 rep sets of deadweights and crunches
Today I completed the full three groups of 12 rep sets of dead weight exercises, only a bit winded at the end.
What changed – two factors. 1: I dropped the crunches. 2: I ate more on thursday than I did one tuesday (the caloric intake on wednesday before the routine was the same as friday before the routine)
Not sure which factor is bigger.
You definitely need to calories to do the work.
If it’s a lightheaded, more bizarre or malignant feeling of exhaustion (not sure what to call it) then it could be low blood sugar. Have you had your sugar/insulin levels checked? Going keto might help. You would feel like absolute shit for a week and then, from my experience, feel much better than before.
120 calories via whey+milk or water, just before you start.
Milk? Do you think you’re talking to Ted S?
1%, of course. No point going overboard here.
If only 1% of it is milk, what’s the rest of the stuff in the container?
You’re lucky I don’t have cat-butt powers.

Based on Hillary and freinds’ email carelessness – it looks like the real reason the French and Hillary were so hot to kill Gaddafi was over currency more than oil. Gaddafi had accumulated 143 tons of gold and was planning an African gold-backed currency. I wonder where that gold ended up?
We’ll find out when Marky Mark stars in Three Kings II
I loved that movie.

“Nice to see some vague stirrings in Congress, to regain the tatters of their authority.”
I wonder what brought about this change all of a sudden, after Rand has been complaining about this under two presidents now. And Kaine really is the last person in the Senate who has any moral ground to talk about this. He was the running mate for Bomby McBomberson- the architect of the Libya debacle and the only presidential candidate who was openly advocating no fly zones in Syria.
It’d be really nice if they decided to exercise that authority regardless of what letter followed the name of the President.
If only the Senate was filled with Rand Pauls

Sad news. Small arms manufacturer Browning has ended production of the Browning Hi Power semiautomatic handgun.
Time to commemorate by replacing the spur hammer on mine with a ring. Bitey biting biter that it is at the moment.
I have a Star .380 that is a work of art…until you shoot it. the spur at the back top of the gripis short and the skin between your thumb and first finger laps over it. Jesus, that thing bites worse than a shark.
I have a m43 Firestar. It shoots nice for a heavy small gun.
Don’t worry. Nighthawk will make you one. For $2800 MSRP.
I would never pay that much for a handgun. Well maybe this one.

Nah, it looks like hammer down to me. Hammer down, none in the chamber. That was SOP, and enforced too.

Yep 3.

Am I nuts or did colonialism die more than sixty years ago? Why must everyone dredge-up the past and fight about the horrors of the 20th Century in THE 21ST CENTURY!
Because, to progs, it’s always Selma in 1965; never anywhere else and never any other time.
All progs fall into three major overlapping historical LARPing categories. Basically, the more self-righteous you feel when pretending that you are currently living in a historical context that ended generations ago, the bigger your prog-boner is:
1) Weimar, Germany
2) Civil Rights Era (although this is diminishing in popularity as progs begin to realize that Dr. REVERAND MLK was an icky Christian)
3) Anywhere in the colonial period
They need something pure evil to struggle against; it’s how they define themselves. It’s impossible that people just have different views of how to approach the problems of the world. Someone needs to be evil so they can be moral crusaders fighting for what is right and shit. Trying to compare modern disagreements with the much worse evils of the past is how they do it.
No colonialism – so no wheels and no immigrants?
Colonialism is an explicitly Marxist hobbyhorse. It fuels their lust for “liberation”.
Rent control push is spreading across US
I swear, THIS TIME it’s totally going to work!
So, I guess this means we can expect an even bigger tidal wave of people fleeing Kali. Utterly flummoxed as to how their beloved state turned into a nightmarish, bureaucratic disaster, they will continue to vote for prog Dems.
More like it’s spreading to other Prog cities.

Princeton professor under fire after using n-word in lecture
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/02/09/princeton-professor-under-fire-after-using-n-word-in-lecture.html
***
An anthropology professor at Princeton University allegedly used the n-word multiple times during a lecture this week, prompting a walkout by several students and an expletive-laced in-class confrontation.
Several students told The Daily Princetonian that professor Lawrence Rosen used the word “n—-r” when asking a question Tuesday during his Anthropology 212 course, “Cultural Freedoms: Hate Speech, Blasphemy and Pornography.”
“What is worse, a white man punching a black man, or white man calling a black man a n—-r?” Rosen allegedly asked during a lecture on oppressive symbolism.
Student Devyn Holliday told the student newspaper that Rosen, who did not return a message seeking comment Friday, used the word while describing “what is acceptable as free speech and what is not.”
After asking that initial question, students said Rosen used the word “n—-r” two more times during in-class discussions.

I guessed they stopped teaching this.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sticks_and_Stones
***
“Sticks and Stones” is an English language children’s rhyme. The rhyme persuades the child victim of name-calling to ignore the taunt, to refrain from physical retaliation, and to remain calm and good-living.
First appearance
Alexander William Kinglake in his EOTHEN (written 1830, published in London, J. Ollivier, 1844) used “golden sticks and stones”.
It is reported[1] to have appeared in The Christian Recorder of March 1862, a publication of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, where it is presented as an “old adage” in this form:
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never break me.

Why are these people choosing to give this word so much power over them? They willing submitting to a word
^THIS^
I knew a black comedian who said hearing it was like getting the star in Super Mario.
For 400 years, no less.
It really is a good question. Granted, there is a unique history behind that word in the US, but is it really so much worse than any other insult? If someone called me a kike, I’d probably laugh at him, call him an idiot and walk away.
Click and Clack used to call themselves Goombas.
It’s quite simple. If the word wasn’t thought to be so hurtful, they would have one fewer avenue to play the victim. Since victim status is so desirable, they have a strong incentive to protect the perception that this fucking word causes unforgivable harm.
They aren’t, they choose to use the word to gain power.

Oh, Daily Fail, your site makes me want to subscribe to print edition and compare the differences.
It was explained to me that DM site has more of international and female audience than the paper (which has reputation as something Archie Bunkers of the Shires read) so their articles have a decidedly different spin. This sort of thing confirms that theory.
Obligatory: would be glad the cheer her out of that outfit.
Historically, the readership of the newspapers were as follows:
The Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country.
The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country.
The Times is read by people who actually do run the country.
The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country.
The Financial Times is read by people who own the country.
The Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country.
The Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is run by another country.
The Sun readers don’t care who runs the country, as long as she’s got big tits.

A couple of months I posted that I had applied for a promotion to Vice President of Business Development at the company I worked for. I wanted to update you guys to say that I got word back from management that they need to speak to the CEO to “determine the strategic direction of the Company before hiring a new VPBD.”
My translation is this: “We’re not sure if we want to fill the position because we can get you and your colleagues to do the travel instead of paying someone to do the travel as a full-time job.”
Since the job of the VPBD has already been split between me and my colleagues for the past year or so, they probably figure they can save the six-figure salary+benefits if they just keep continuing to have us each do our own jobs+1/3 of a VPBD’s job. This means that while I’m out there being a VPBD (without the pay for it), I’m usually stuck in a hotel room doing HQ office work remotely because I don’t have the time to both mingle & build relationships while also doing the credit work I have to do to produce loan volume for the clients that I already have relationships with.
This is all especially disappointing because my boss gave me the “ok” and his boss said that she had me in mind for the job too… but it looks like they’re leaning for a cheaper route that is causing stress for the whole team. That being said, I haven’t received a “no” yet, and being in sales, I’ll keep pushing till I get a firm “no” or “yes.”
A couple of months *ago*
Sheesh…
That sucks. I’ve had the rug pulled out from under me like that before.
The most irritating thing is that I wish I’d actually get a small pay bump for doing this travel that the VPBD is supposed to be doing… but alas that’s looking like it won’t happen.
Time to start feeling around your professional network for external opportunities.
I’d just start doing the mingling and stop doing the other work. Bring in enough contracts they’ll care less about the other stuff sliding. Bonus points if you successfully delegate your ‘other work’ to people without having the title or authority to do so.

I’d say the flag is a decent landmark.
At least their reasoning wasn’t that it’s “hate speech” or “colonialism” or some other such horseshit.
Guess what? Unless you own all the property between where you are and the thing you want to look at, you don’t own the view.

In other news, Ireland is in America.
Yeh, those positive reviews seem legit.
Aside from the Irish thing, it couldn’t possibly be that people have different tastes and not every single person on Planet Earth walks in lockstep with the SJW diversity agenda? Maybe people judge art and entertainment on its individual merit and not on how it fits into a checklist of Prog wet dreams? No. It has to be DRUMPF NATZEEZ!
The 100% score makes me dread BP. I’ll still go see it, but why Elections-in-Iraq this shit? It’s a Marvel film, not the second coming of Blazing Saddles.
Also obligatory “use Christopher Priest’s version of Black Panther setting and characters, FFS!”

The funny thing is, most dictators even have the humility to only win 99% of the vote.
He said that because Donald Trump exists, the movie was trying too hard to #resist Nazi America, and that made the movie worse. I can actually agree with the critique that certain movies/shows are trying too hard to #resist and it comes off as cheesy and pandering. I haven’t seen the movie though.
I also haven’t read the full review – its possible the author of the article is twisting the words of the review author, saying that it’s “because Trump!” but in reality the reviewer is just saying that it shows that the movie is trying too hard to #resist and it negatively impacted the performances.
(1) “Jude Terror”…
(2) I’m sure other outlets are very disappointed not to have you.
He’s a regular douchebag like most of the comics media – been called out many, many times by Diversity & Comics, etc. (like most of those SJW comics nuts, he uses a block bot to block anyone who follows D&C or other folks). https://twitter.com/judeterror
I’ll wait for Red letter media to weigh in before deciding if I go. Given that RT has Star Wars at 95% tells me I don’t need to listen to the aggregators. Seriously, find a critic you generally agree with, and let them help you decide if it’s worth the money, especially if you think there might be an “SJW effect” involved.
It’s funny that, not so long ago, it used to be the exact opposite. The aggregation smoothed out a lot of the more wacky opinions and you generally got a pretty fair assessment. Now, since everything in culture has to be homogenized and if it isn’t, NAZIS!!!!, the reviews are pretty useless. I pay more attention to the audience scores than the critic scores now anyway since, for my money, the critics are all wannabe Lib Arts Professors who couldn’t hack it.
RLM reviews of all Marvel movies are the same though: It was good. Not a masterpiece. We forgot we reviewed the movie before. Rich, what will comic nerds think?
Entertaining when they do it, but usually not anything to really base whether you should go see the movie on.
That’s kind of what I mean. Everyone is saying it’s the Citizen Kane of comic book movies. I don’t trust them, so I’ll wait for critics that I know are level-headed and immune to the SJW bug. If they say it’s a masterpiece, then I’ll know they mean it. If they say its good but not great, then I won’t go and will know the other critics are probably full of it.
That’s the Marvel movie problem – outside small things on the margin (Winter Soldier tries for small amount of social commentary, Ragnarok doesn’t, but there’s not much either way) reviews are interchangeable. They make sure to not fuck up, and if they try something new, they keep a lid on it before it goes retarded.
Their Rogue One summary shows what happens when you don’t keep a tight lid the Marvel way (watch all the way through for the punchline).
I never get tired of that bit.
That was obnoxious.
And fuck you, Chirrut Îmwe is awesome.
Making your Zatoichi knockoff a second banana with minimal impact on the plot and no character development is inexcusable. He should have had his own movie.
Baby steps. I would be thrilled to see a Guardian of the Whills movie actually.
After TLJ, I want 20 years of Star Wars lying fallow, and then someone doing KOTOR adaptation.
I know we’re not getting it, but the brand is spent.
Isn’t there rumors of a Netflix Old Republic series?
Google search says fans really want it. I don’t see how it can happen when Disney is making its own video streaming service and has already said they’ll pull all their content from Netflix in 2019.
And Old Republic series at Disney may have the same problem Horus Heresy had at GW for years – yeah, fans want it, but it don’t move the merch we want to. It won’t feed into all the movies coming out set in either Rebellion-era or JJ-era.
Although, if people who did Clone Wars were to take a crack at it… I mean, those fuckers made me like prequels more, and that took skill (and/or 100 episodes of content to provide context and character development that needed to be on the screen in the first place. GEORGE.)
You know, Darth Revan was supposed to make a cameo as a Force ghost in Clone Wars until Lucas nixed it, because the Force doesn’t work that way or some bullshit. That was Lucas’s 2nd most unforgivable sin behind fucking up 1313.
Fuck it, no one knows what Force is after CW had that silly dark side/light side/grey side antromorphised episode (even if I loved Anakin seeing what he’ll become but choosing to forget in order to fight a greater threat).
Why not stick to its roots and make “balance” be natural state of the Force, and “dark side” is an anomaly? Like a simple-minded Chi interpretation or something? Instead of Manichean “Good vs Evil” interpretation, with its “Well actually, what if they aren’t so different, huh?” modern spawn.
Luckily TLJ burned THAT down too, with idiotic “yeah, it doesn’t matter, dark vs light is always absolutely balanced, if you have one you have equal amount of other, Pol Pot did nothing wrong, let’s Year Zero everything!”
So what you’re saying is that you’re not Team Renylo?
The only lesson I took from that movie is that you should whip plucky orphans and soulful animals much harder, or your Libertopia will get somewhat mussed by idiots .
Woke Reviews:
I’m gonna go out a limb here and suggest if it wasn’t for white privilege and horrific racism, Black Panther would be more popular than Bat-Man, Spider-Man, and Superman combined. There I said it.
And don’t get me going on Wonder-Woman and the popularity gap!
The really annoying response I saw was that the reviewer was wrong just because he didn’t understand how important it was for a black superhero movie to finally get made.
Blade

Blankman
Steel
Spawn
There is no history anymore.
Undercover Brother!
Lol, I liked that movie.
+1 you got soul
Just like how they say Ms. Marvel, oops I mean Captain Marvel will be the first female superhero movie. Supergirl was over 30 years ago and Catwoman (who was also black) was over a decade ago. I don’t think it’s willful ignorance though, it’s just ignorance. They don’t know because they don’t really care about the movies, they just care that they are popular and can be used as a platform.
Not to mention the 300 odd films where a 105 pound swimsuit model beats the shit out of a guy built like John Cena. Because if they weren’t superheroes, it ain’t gonna happen.
Barb Wire and Tank Girl too…not really superheroes per se, but “great” comic characters…..at least Lori Petty.

“The County’s Outrageous Targeting of Reporter Who Exposed Jail Deaths
Taxpayer-funded attorneys are needlessly harassing a journalist who did her job and did it well. They need to knock it off.
A headline like “60 Dead Inmates” has a way of focusing the mind, at least in theory. Alarm bells should have been going off across the county government when San Diego CityBeat exposed the shocking death toll at local jails.
But prisoners kept dying, including a man who killed himself behind bars in yet anther suicide. His widow is suing. On the defensive, the county’s attorneys have found a target to harass: One of the reporters behind the award-winning coverage. They’ve upended her life, forcing her to do one of three things — expose sources by testifying about her work, agree to a deal that would protect her fragile health at the expense of harming the widow’s case or fight back.
Kelly Davis, a highly respected colleague and fellow contributor to VOSD, did the right thing and refused to play ball with the county. A judge is standing with her, but the legal scuffle isn’t over.”

“Reuters: Is There A ‘Glass Ceiling For Dogs’?
Social justice activists have found a new pet cause: the patriarchal oppression of canines.
Writing for Reuters, Stephanie Kelly highlights how male-dominated the field of dog shows have become and asks, Is there a “glass ceiling for dogs?” The primary root of the patriarchal problem is that females eventually have to retire in order to breed puppies, whereas the male dogs can “keep competing for years.”
Gail Miller Bisher, a spokeswoman for the Westminster Kennel Club, said the winning female German shepherd from last year’s Westminster competition, Rumor, will not be returning this year after becoming a mom.
“Now she won’t show again, she’s done,” said Bisher. “But males can keep going. They can be used as stud and continue showing and keep their coat and keep their shape of body and all that.”
Because of this unfair truth of biology, female dogs have taken home the award for Best In Show at Westminster just 39 times, a little over half the number of times male dogs have won (71). The gender inequity is also evident in the number of competitors this year: 1,220 females vs. 1,699 males.
Kelly also notes the oppressive language used in reference to female dogs in pure-bred circles; males are referred to simply as “dogs,” while females are “bitches.””

The soldiers shot each man two or three times, he said. “When they were being buried, some were still making noises. Others were already dead.”

I do think it’s, at best, both irresponsible and inaccurate for the media to continue to refer use the terms “Muslim” and “Buddhist” as descriptive terms as opposed to “Rohingya” and “Rakhine/Arakanese.” It shows inherent bias towards the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s simplistic narrative this is primarily a religious conflict as opposed to being a primarily ethnic conflict. If it were primarily religious, we’d see state-sponsored genocide perpetrated against Bamar Muslims, which are the largest Muslim ethnic group in Myanmar or against the Panthay.
Yet another example of the media substituting broad generalizations for nuance, history, and specific details.
The media would gain some respect back if they treated every reader/listener/consumer as a sophisticate such as HM.

Michael Lewis goes to Trumpland, meets Bannon, and tells Bloomberg the meandering and not-especially-interesting tale
Bannon thinks the U.S. is in decline and the people perched on top don’t particularly care. “The elites of both parties are comfortable with America being in decline,” he says. “They manage on the way down, and they make even more wealth.” He sees his job as finding ways to organize the masses against the elites. Trump was never an end in himself but the means to it — and Bannon clearly finds some of what Trump has done since taking office, like the tax cuts, as, at best, beside the point. He also finds distasteful some of the people Trump brought into his inner circle — some of the generals who have, in Bannon’s view, wasted trillions of dollars and American lives; plus the financiers. Bannon thinks Goldman Sachs’s shareholders should have been wiped out in 2008, and that its president, Gary Cohn, should have lost his job. Instead Goldman Sachs Group Inc. has survived, and Cohn, who paid himself hundreds of millions of dollars, now gets to swan around as Trump’s economic adviser.
Bannon has a favorite line: If I had to choose who will run the country, 100 Goldman Sachs partners or the first 100 people who walk into a Trump rally, I’d choose the people at the Trump rally. I have my own version of this line: If I had to choose a president, Donald Trump or anyone else I’ve ever known, I’d choose anyone else I’ve ever known. Among the revelations of Wolff’s book was just how many of the people in and around Trump’s White House feel more or less as I do. “Insulting Donald Trump’s intelligence was both the thing you could not do and the thing that everybody was guilty of,” Wolff writes. “Everyone, in his or her own way, struggled to express the baldly obvious fact that the president did not know enough, did not know what he didn’t know, and did not particularly care.” Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called Trump “a fucking moron.” Treasury Secretary Mnuchin and ex-Chief of Staff Reince Priebus preferred to describe Trump as “an idiot.” National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster called him a “dope.” Cohn called Trump “dumb as shit.”
Haha, so clever- “anybody but that incurious illiterate idiot Trump”. But Steve Bannon miraculously got Trump elected, via some sort of mass hypnosis, or something.
But the more we learn about Trump, the more stupendous Bannon’s achievement appears. It’s as if he took the Cleveland Browns to the Super Bowl and then, in the off-season, turned the football players into Olympic athletes, and won gold in curling.
Haha, so clever. Why, if Bannon could get Trump elected, he could get a laundry hamper full of dirty socks and underwear elected.
When el Trumpissimo gets elected to a second term, maybe the Michael Lewises of the world will gather together and commit suicide en masse.
It’s not miraculous at all that an incurious illiterate idiot leads a populace composed of incurious illiterate idiots.
That’s a global reality.
Somehow the incurious illiterate idiots who compose the population manage to keep the lights on, food in the grocery stores, booze in the liquor stores, fuel at the filling stations, natural gas in the pipelines, keep clean water out of the taps, deal with the literal shit flushed down the toilets, get rid of the garbage, staff the hospitals, keep the communications nets running, fix the furnaces and air conditioners, build stuff….
For a bunch of incurious illiterate idiots, they get a lot done every day.

Character elements from Christopher Priest’s 1998-2003 Black Panther series were adapted for the film.[34] M’Baku is not referred to in the film by his comics alter ego “Man-Ape”, since Marvel felt there were “a lot of racial implications that don’t sit well” in having a black character dress up as an ape. This aspect of the character was instead reworked to have the Jabari tribe that M’Baku is the leader of worship the gorilla gods, with M’Baku still wearing elements of fur on his arms and legs and a chest-plate that hints at the gorilla. Moore continued, “Man-Ape is a problematic character for a lot of reasons, but the idea behind Man-Ape we thought was really fascinating … It’s a line I think we’re walking, and hopefully walking successfully.”[34]

“Washington (CNN)Sen. Angus King of Maine has finally netted his state a lobster emoji.
In September, the independent senator sent a letter to the California-based Unicode Consortium pressing for the emoji, highlighting the crustacean’s economic and cultural value to Maine.
On Wednesday, the Unicode Consortium announced the emoji would be added to its library, a move that King hailed as “great news.” He thanked the emoji-creating company “for recognizing the impact of this critical crustacean, in Maine and across the country.””

As was his Mentor.
Actually, I’m just busting balls. I’m a Jung fan. I would consider Jung’s defense of the individual and criticism of the state to be proto-libertarian.
Well he did have a psychotic episode or whatever you want to call it for a period of time.
Not a fan of JBP I take it?
As I said above, just busting balls.
That having been said, I have to admit some discomfort at the alacrity and zeal with which Peterson has taken the mantle of ‘public intellectual’. Like Chomsky et al., there is always a point in which the public intellectual begins to authoritatively speak beyond the sphere of his or her expertise, which is the ultimate intellectual sin. I’d like to think Peterson is better than that.
I wouldn’t say he has taken it on with ‘alacrity and zeal’. If you look at some of his lectures and presentations pre-Pronouns, he still has the same energy and look as if a man on a mission. Also, I don’t know if accepting invitations everywhere = taking the mantle.
Obviously he is accepting this time as an opportunity, but I wouldn’t put him in the same ballpark as Chomsky. At least not yet.
I’m getting really tired of seeing so many empty hit pieces put out in the media, especially in Canada. I’d like to see some legit, constructive criticism of JBP and his ideas. All I see is ad hominems and character assassination, most of it dismissive and dripping with snobbery.
It’s sad because he has some interesting takes on some fairly complex and profound topics and all they want to ask him is about gender pronouns. Basically he’s a culture war football.
See, I would. Particularly when the topics of his interviews, speeches, etc. aren’t about his primary academic interests, Jungian psychology and drug/alcohol addiction, but wearing his hat as cultural critic. Not that I disagree with his attacks against postmodernism, but he’s definitely working the public intellectual circuit. Even more so with his latest book, written for a much more popular audience than the last one. I hope he doesn’t go the Chomsky route, but who knows?
In Peterson’s defense, how many public intellectuals offer commentary outside their field of expertise? Seems to happen quite often.
They all do! That’s the problem. I would think Peterson would try to avoid becoming a public intellectual because of that.
I wonder if he will be able to maintain a balance somehow; it strikes me that he’s on a bit of a crusade, and perhaps the limelight he’s cultivating *does* afford him the title ‘public intellectual’. I’ve listened to enough of his presentations to hear him admit to taking criticism from his peers and his family, and that he has had to reconsider how he comes across to the public. Perhaps he will continue that going forward; I’d hate to see his positive contributions be dulled from over-exposure.
I think he’s deep down more of a preacher, so I expect his trajectory to go with More Jesus instead of Hot Take path.
Like a geneticist speaking about atheism?
I like Peterson. I think he’s pretty insightful.
“there is always a point in which the public intellectual begins to authoritatively speak beyond the sphere of his or her expertise”
I wonder if this should be added to the list of Iron Laws.
He is insightful from a particular perspective. He is also articulate, but I will say this again – no one is as smart as they think they are.

So they’ve been airing these local stories about hate groups distributing racist flyers in neighborhoods. I guess this happened around my neighborhood this week and the local radio had been hitting this story hard. They also say that this happened possibly in retaliation to an anti-hate ralley downtown over the weekend. I’m guessing the two events are probably connected but not in the way the media thinks. They seem to be oblivious to the fact that 99% Of these things are hoxes. The last time this happened was in a very liberal neighborhood near campus.
Where do you live, bro?
Hilliard, OH which is a NW suburb of Columbus.
I’ve trucked through and around Columbus plenty of times in the past, though have spent zero time hanging out there.
There’s a Kenworth plant south of you in Chillicothe, so there’s that.
Navistar has a plant in New Rome for engine assembly. I did a lot of work for them, as well as Navistar in Springfield.
I’ve camped down there at Scioto Trail State Park. Just a couple miles south of town. They had a string of missing and slain women down there a few years back. Mostly prostitutes. ID did a series about it.
Yeah, I lived in Lincoln Village starting whenI was 10. Parents are still there. It’s adjacent to New Rome. New Rome cops were notorious until the state shut them down. They jacked me and a lot of people out of quite a bit of money. Franklin County patrols it now. Lived over near campus before that.

Dinner tonight: Egg salad sandwiches and bacon. I’m beginning to work through The Science of Good Cooking, and lesson 1 was “low and slow leads to even cooking”
Nice. Egg salad / deviled eggs are so much better than their reputation. Unfortunately the 50’s happened and ruined these foods in popular culture.
The only egg salad I’ve had before tonight has been prepackaged egg salad from the grocery store. Needless to say, it was an enlightening experience to make my own.
Deviled eggs were one of the alternate recipes, but I needed to make something that resembled a dinner. Deviled eggs take me back to my childhood. My next door neighbor’s grandma made an extra batch of deviled eggs any time she was catering a wedding so that we’d stay out of the wedding food.
Must be a regional thing, round here (north central OH) egg salad and deviled eggs have been regular old food as long as I can remember.
I spent a long time in the Ohio Valley. After moving out, I realized it had possibly the world’s greatest food culture. 100% IDGAF, if its good we are eating it. Fried baloney sandwiches are natures perfect food (cut like fireman badges, not radioactive signs), but everyone outside of the Pittsburgh-Sandusky-Buffalo triangle turns up their nose at them.
Yup, Waldo’s world famous fried bologna sandwich
To me, they’re picnic/potluck food. I was never aware of any stigma against egg salad or deviled eggs.
A properly made egg salad sandwich with cucumber and the crusts cut off is a thing of beauty.
I’m thinking about making potato salad tomorrow.

Yeah, when I see a bikini, Aristotle it’s the first thing that comes to mind.
The new dress code cannot be faulted for vagueness. Indeed, it has notable specificity (it mentions the “bottom one-half of the anal cleft,” and is even more detailed about breasts) that has the baristas incensed about the examinations and anatomical measurements that law enforcement might require.
Sounds more like Heraclitus than Aristotle.

The Tet Offensive was a powerful blow against US imperialism and a boon to the antiwar movement.
https://www.jacobinmag.com/2018/01/tet-offensive-vietnam-war-american-empire
***
It may sound a bit pat, but the most important legacy of the Vietnam-era antiwar movement (and indeed all the liberal/left movements of that era) is the necessity of stamina and persistence. The forces that serve imperialism count on citizen apathy and deference and the disillusionment of activists. Of course, in the face of seemingly endless war and militarism, disillusionment is understandable. But throughout history, public opposition has acted as a brake on some forms of aggression. For example, in his memoirs, Nixon conceded that he did not follow through on Operation Duck Huck (a set of escalating threats he issued to Hanoi in 1969) because of his concern that they would further inflame an already massively growing antiwar movement.
There is a lot to learn from, and be inspired by, in the long history of political resistance. In recent years, for example, I’ve been struck by the important links being made between antiwar Vietnam veterans and younger veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Cross-generational and multi-issue alliances are crucial. It is ever more important to identify, and act upon, the connections between anti-imperialism, anti-racism, movements for economic, sexual, and gender equality, the global climate justice movement, the anti-nuclear movement, and more.

Yusef, if would be so kind to indulge me, I’m having a HVAC issue at work. And since my employer can be a bit of a cheap ass when it comes to unexpected expenses, I could use some professional input.
I do a lot of custom color stains and paints on wood veneer, real wood and brick mold windows and doors. This of course requires a spray booth. The basic setup of the booth is 16ft wide, 24ft long, 9 ft tall. It has a negative air return with the filters at the back and a large exhaust vent behind them feeding out of the roof of the building. There are two large doors at the front with rubber flaps attached the the bottoms to keep excess air from coming in and a small side door at the back near where you turn on the lights and fan. The room the booth is housed in is roughly four times the surface area of the size of the booth itself.
The problem I’m having is with the furnace heating the rooms outside the spray booth room. When I run the fan it has begun to extinguish the pilot light in the electric heater in the front office/showroom area and draws the remaining gas into my booth’s area. The office/showroom area is separated from my work area by two doors that we always keep closed. So obviously we have a venting issue. So far, the only way I’ve able to avoid this is to turn up the heat in my area and completely turn off the heat in the office area while I spray. There is a total of three furnaces in the building. Two ceiling furnaces in my area and one ground furnace in the office area. I hope I roughly made some sense with my description.
Any thoughts?
Why does the electric heater have a pilot light?
I believe the pilot light is sparked by an electric charge and then gas is fed through it. I’m just going off of what I’ve been told. I know fuck all about HVAC in general and am probably describing the setup poorly. Just taking a shott in the dark here.
And it appears I posted this on a dead edition of the links….damn.
