If you have a child starting college (or are starting college yourself) I strongly urge you to get the meningitis vaccine or at least ask your doctor about it. My wife had a friend die of bacterial meningitis during college. The good news is almost nobody gets bacterial meningitis, the bad news is, the fatality rate is pretty darn high. Antibiotics, for the most part get trapped on the wrong side of the blood-brain barrier, so acute treatment is not as effective as it should be.

About 20 years ago we hosted a party and one of our guests brought a friend from his work we hadn’t met before, who turned out to be a terrific guy who we really liked. We were reassured, as no one had intimate contact with him, that there was no risk to anyone who was at the party, and also that there was zero chance our party, house or guests caused his infection. Honest question here – I wonder what their starting wage is. My first job in NYC, that required no skills whatsoever, paid ten dollars an hour – 20 years ago. It’s hard for me to believe that the “de facto minimum wage” here isn’t already 15 bucks an hour.
According to the Google, $8.00 is the before tips min wage for servers in NYC. Other non-tip positions have gone to $15.
I’m not talking MW – I’m talking actual wage. In my day the lowest wage you could find was higher than MW. Obviously it’s not my business to tell people how much to pay but I do find it notable if and when the lowest earners are in fact being paid less in constant dollars than they were 20 years ago. That is a more interesting phenomenon that people could be talking about instead of “minimum wage” bullshit.
When I got my first “official” jobs (not cash from some farmer or construction crew) back in 1981 or so, the minimum was $3.35/hr and we were still feeling the effect of the recession. I was glad to have a job and busted my ass for that money.

In Houston, where waiting tables is a legitimate career path, I was making the minimum ($2.12?) But my take-home was $17.50/hr (in 1993). I paid more to the restaurant in my tip-out than they paid me.

It would look a lot worse if a third party reimbursed him. This is only an illegal campaign contribution if it was made because Trump was running in order to prevent her from harming his campaign, which will be hard to prove (absent a smoking gun).
Now, that smoking gun is likely to be Cohen, who doesn’t strike me as a credible witness.
As a basis for impeachment, I think a campaign finance violation is laughable. The Obama campaign took in-kind contributions from Facebook, after all. Hillary violated campaign finance law by not disclosing the payments for the Steele dossier. I am sure there are multitudes of other examples.

Broward County Schools is calling me to encourage me to vote for a $0.50 per $1,000 valuation property tax increase to pay for “an additional 300 school resource officers”, because Parkland.
The county voted for an $800 million bond issuance for the schools a few years ago. Every public school got this banner to show how much $$$$ they were getting and what was going to be done. Almost none of that has gotten done and most of the schools aren’t getting shit because the first projects went so far over budget.
Meanwhile, a Broward school board member is mocking the physical appearance of the brother of a girl who was killed there, the girl who was harassed by that scumbag coach who failed to do a fucking thing to protect anyone.

Funny thing: they spec components and performance, so suppliers end up in a weird situation trying to cut the right corners to secure business, meet spec, and be profitable. The result is a bunch of equipment with problems.
The odd part of this is that the districts do the buying; they rely on the specs: if a box is checked, then we’re getting good equipment. The reality is that the state is leading them down the road to particularly high warranty expense.
As I implied in a long post on the previous post, the loop of understanding/speccing/enjoying is often broken, in this case by the very system and oversight meant to perfect it.
That said, there are a couple of firms I would say are above reproach: they explain that the old standards are BS, they refuse to sell anything that they know won’t work or last, and they’d rather lose business than do a client a disservice…..and they haven’t gone broke yet.
