Those numerous guilty well-to-do Socialists, the Makers, those convinced of their regretful privilege, who have excess income/possessions/accounts/shoes/value can register on the site as Makers-Seeking-Takers. Likewise, the suffering masses of Socialists, the Takers, upon whose backs the Makers have trod in their patriarchal white-male-cishetero (regardless of whether or not you are such a thing, for if you’re a Maker it’s this oppressive identity class that forced you to be unwittingly successful) pursuit of greed, will register as Takers-Seeking-Makers.
The Makers will be subject to the “From Each According to Its Ability” questionnaire to determine their Bougie-ness, their level of unacceptable indulgence. And in their turn, the Takers will complete the “To Each According to Its Need” profile, so as to determine their level of Victim’hood. The app will then find matches among these Socialists, appropriately pairing equal levels of Bougie-ness to Victim’hood. The ensuing orgy of wealth transfer will be epic!!!
Naturally, the affluent Democrats suffering from white guilt will flock to the site, abandon their “you first” approach to benevolence, and shed their damning excess. No longer will obstructionist conservative legislators force Socialists to take lavish vacations, own expensive homes, patronize Starbucks. The Socialist Makers will finally be free to voluntarily give away to the Takers all that they are able. Existing charities already accepting donations and aiding the less-fortunate will cease to be a hindrance to the Socialists’ attempts at uplifting their fellow [insert preferred pronoun here].

Socialists may exist within libertopia as in they have permission to. “Can” implies ability and I have no reason to believe they have the ability not to get all grabby and murdery.
It’s a variant of the ol’ “If your ideas were any good you wouldn’t need to enforce them at gunpoint”, which is trite and not very useful as a universal premise (we enforce property rights at gunpoint, after all) but gets to a core truth about negative and positive rights. Only negative rights can be universally and equally applied without infringing on individual liberty. If I have a right to health care on demand, that means at least some medical professional has lost the right to his or her freedom to say, “no”.
Socialism could work. It works all the time. It’s working its ass off in Venezuela right now. Socialism just says that the state controls the distribution of some or all resources rather than the free market. There’s nothing about the definition of socialism that says it has to do so effectively or efficiently or fairly, just that it has to do it at all. Socialism made the Yugo: a shitty car that nobody wants. It made a car, it just sucked. I can be a surgeon if a surgeon is just a person who performs surgery on people. I’d kill every patient, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t be a surgeon, I’d just be a horrible one.

e.g. the Oreskes meta-analysis which quoted “97% of scientists agree abt climate change”…
..not only was the ‘what they were actually agreeing about’ widely misconstrued – most agreed that the mechanism mere existed, not on the degree or rates of change; and even then only a minority believed change was potentially ‘catastrophic’…
…but, if i recall, only a tiny minority of these scientists – like single digits – were even in the fields of climate-science AT ALL.
iow, a survey of PhD’s isn’t going to be an expert pool on anything science-related if 80% of them are humanities professors.
fwiw, i used to do work with a company that specialized in constructing “Expert panels” for use in surveys. Their bread+butter was getting pools of doctors in specific areas so that they could be used by pharma companies to do research. but they also got lawyers in specific areas, scientists, govt people…. and would rent them out like Whore Panels to big corporations. My job involved being middle-man in many of these processes, where i’d design the panel and the questions and the format, and run the Q+A, and write the report and present to management.
That’s pretty cool.
I have a close friend who actually *is* an expert in their field who is available via that site, who is continually told their rate is too high. People want expert advice, but only if it’s free or cheap.
If “gun expert” means “someone who thinks about guns a lot” then anyone working for the Brady Campaign would be a “gun expert”. The only thing that terrifies me about a 3D printed gun is firing one myself. I like my fingers where they are, thanks.

i still think qualifying the data between ‘high level of awareness’ and “none” would provide far more depth and value to any opinion polling.
in many cases, ‘experts’ might even be wrong, have views more (or less)-divergent than general public
(come down far harder on sides, or otherwise go, “well its complicated” and hew to center)…
…in every case, having some 2nd level of data provides *something* which allows multiple cuts at ‘what does this poll really mean’? it creates many more opportunities for good analysis.
I tend to think ‘dumb opinion polling’ which doesn’t provide metrics on who the sample is, or if they do simply provides basic-demographic stuff like, ‘age /race/income’ etc is often less than useless because its not clear on ‘how strong are these opinions’ and what basis there is for them (if any)

I’ve been in charge of putting together an internal intranet website for the company. I’ve been on this project since early May and still don’t have a fucking site up and running. I’ve talked to no less than 40 people trying to piece together various parts of the site, and thought it was almost over since site work started yesterday. Nope, the last approval I need in order to use my own fucking photos taken on my phone for this specific project, and they come back to me and say they can’t let me use the site design that’s been approved through two layers of bureaucracy already. Nevermind that this site is going to be announced to the entire company in less than two weeks, let’s redesign the whole fucking thing from scratch again!

Sweet! At my place, “iterative development process” means redesigning or adding to the core functionality of the site or app at the whim of a content person two weeks before we push to production. I’ve never wanted to be in management, but this job has convinced me that I need to be, just so someone can say, “Sure, great idea. We’ll throw that in the hopper for the next version after we push what we all agreed to, mocked up, and UX tested two months ago. Now go write ‘I will respect the process’ 100 times on that whiteboard.”
Two months? Good god man. Don’t you know you need to throw minimum viable products over the wall in sprints until the stench of undelivered failures becomes overwhelming? Or how Amazon is constantly releasing thousands of incremental improvements during that same length of time, so you should too?
I was just told I have six months to make what amounts to a calendar with filterable events. In an existing site. The scary thing is that I’ll finish it on my own and have it deployable in probably like a month, given ample dicking around time, but every time I say “we’re ready to put this into public user testing” someone will decide they want to add some new functionality on to it. Hopefully by winter they’ll have run out of ideas. I work with people who think information architecture is coming up with a navigation menu and have no idea what data architecture is other than something that probably involves math and semicolons and is to be avoided at all costs.
I would kill to be able to wait to the end of a 2 week spring to implement.

It’s a little late but I wanted to share this seeing as how it has made me laugh out loud two nights in a row while playing in the background. It’s a series of interviews with Steven Wright and Craig Ferguson. It takes a few times for it to really pick up speed, though OMWC would probably get a kick out of Steven Wright’s second appearance, but after awhile they began to improve and riff on their callbacks beautifully. What really surprised me was how Steven Wright slowly began to relax and enjoy himself. His bursts of sustained laughter, clapping and openness with Craig was completely out of character and an unexpected treat. You could tell Steve and Craig genuinely liked each other and that Steve was happy to be there. Steve also momentarily let his guard down and showed a liberation streak in his comments before pulling back. Overall, great stuff.
